Mar. 6, 2013 ? New research provides early evidence that 'good' cholesterol may possess anti-aneurysm forming properties. In laboratory-based investigations, scientists found that increased levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), the so-called good cholesterol, blocked the development of aneurysms -- dangerous 'ballooning' in the wall of a blood vessel -- in the body's largest artery, the aorta.
The researchers say their findings -- which are published in the American Heart Association scientific journal Atherosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology -- lay the foundations for further investigations into ways of raising HDL cholesterol as a possible therapeutic intervention for the condition.
Abdominal aortic aneurysms can rupture and kill without warning. They are responsible for 6,000 deaths in England and Wales each year. There are no therapeutic treatments for aneurysms. Patients are monitored until the aneurysm reaches what is considered to be a critical size where it is at significant risk of rupturing -- 5cm in diameter -- and then it is repaired by surgery.
The study, led by researchers from St George's, University of London, found that elevating the amount of HDL cholesterol in the abdominal area of the aortic artery in mice both reduced the size of aneurysms that had already grown and prevented abdominal aortic aneurysms from forming at all.
The researchers say that while more work is needed to understand the exact mechanism by which HDL cholesterol effects aneurysms, their investigations indicate that raising HDL cholesterol influences the activity of the aortic artery's cells, which are the building blocks of its structure and function.
They found that elevated levels of HDL had two key influences on the cells. Firstly, it altered the signals sent between cells, which, in turn, reduced the activity of a protein called ERK1/2 that is known for its cell growth properties. Secondly, it increased levels of HDL cholesterol induced programmed cell death, which is an essential part of the cell lifecycle that sees old cells replaced with new ones.
The study focused on mice models of the area of the aorta just above the kidney (the suprarenal region) and the region that is just below the kidney and most commonly associated with aneurysm formation in humans (the infrarenal region). The researchers hope that the effects seen in these specific areas of the aortic artery will help explain basic mechanisms of aneurysm formation.
Dr Cockerill says: "HDL cholesterol is made up of a complex family of heterogeneous particles that may vary in composition, size and function. Whilst we have shown that elevating the concentration of the so-called 'good-lipid' can modulate site-specific cellular responses and inhibit aneurysm formation, it is important to learn more about changes that occur on HDL complexity in addition to the effects in the artery's responses that influence aneurysm development."
The researchers say that, in principle, if raising HDLs can be induced using a drug, it could offer a preventative measure to reduce the chance of an aneurysm developing for individuals considered at high risk of aneurysms. It could also offer a treatment option for patients from early diagnosis that could negate the need for surgery. But they point out that much more research is need before this becomes a reality.
The next phase of the investigations, which the researchers hope to begin this year, will see the researchers conduct laboratory tests with families of drugs that can elevate HDLs and reproduce the observed effects on aneurysms.

There were some ambiguities on whether the revised FDI in aviation rules are applicable to new JVs or only existing companies, sources said
NEW DELHI: Foreign Investment Proposal Board (FIPB) has cleared the Tata Sons-AirAsia Joint Venture investment proposal, reported ET Now. According to ET Now's sources at the Finance Ministry there were some ambiguities on whether the revised FDI in aviation rules are applicable to new JVs or only existing companies in the sector.
The Aviation Ministry is understood to have expressed its reservations in a note to FIPB stating that the new company should have been formed before seeking the government's nod.
ET Now reported that post clarity on the issue it is noted that no such rule in the FDI in aviation exists which states that the revised rules are applicable only to existing Indian companies in the sector. "This makes the application for AirAsia in line with the rules that are there which is why the FIPB has gone ahead and given its clearance to the investment proposal by AirAsia," said ET Now.
Finance Ministry sources further indicated that the joint venture will now require regulatory permissions from the DGCA and Civil Aviation Ministry. Once the permissions are given, the entity can start operations in India. AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes is keen to kick off his airline in the country as early as May-June instead of his earlier plans towards the year-end.
Commenting on the clearance by FIPB, Nikhil Vora of IDFC Securities said, "AirAsia JV being cleared is a big positive for investors." Vora said that board representation will not be an issue for foreign airlines.
Ajay Prasad, Former Aviation Secretary told ET Now that with Kingfisher Airlines being grounded, there is space for a new airline in the aviation sector. "It sends a signal to other investors that India is a place for investment," he added.
Malaysia's AirAsia, the largest budget carrier in Asia, plans to launch a regional airline in India in a venture with the Tata group. The new airline, AirAsia India, will be managed by the Malaysian company and based in the southern city of Chennai.
Over the weekend, Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata, who is an avowed aviation buff and whose group is credited with bringing the first airline into the country way back in October 1938, met Ajit Singh, for reportedly discussing the JV plan.
In a related development yesterday, Tony Fernandes said he had chosen the head for the JV.
"I have selected the CEO for AirAsia India. A very smart boy from the South, Madras (Chennai). An amazing CV. Will impress all...," Fernandes tweeted without naming the person.

In a new article published in the Journal of Paleontology, two paleontologists, including one from Simon Fraser University, describe the most diverse group of fossilized green lacewing insects known.
Green lacewings are familiar to gardeners, who value them in organic pest control, for their consumption of large numbers of aphids. The closest modern relatives to these insects are most diverse in southeastern Australia, the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
SFU's Bruce Archibald and the Russian Academy of Sciences' Vladimir Makarkin named the first species of green lacewings from a series of 49- to 53-million-year-old fossil beds stretching across southern British Columbia into Washington State.
Makarkin and Archibald examined 24 fossils from the region, including some that they'd found and others belonging to regional museums, estimating that these contained at least 10 new species. Some of these fossils had minute details so finely preserved that six species could be given names.
Most of the new species are from the famed McAbee locality, near Cache Creek, B.C., which the provincial government recently named a heritage site. "This is a small sample of the treasures that this world-class locality has to offer," says Archibald.
Other fossils described by Archibald and Makarkin come from Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park in B.C.'s Bulkley Valley near Smithers, and from the United States in Republic, Washington State.
The scientists named one of the new species from Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park Pseudochrysopa harveyi in honour of the late area resident Gordon Harvey, recognizing his great generosity. He donated the fossil beds to B.C. Parks in 1967.
"The fossils from these localities have a lot left to tell us, not only as a window into ancient life of the deep past, but also about how our modern natural communities were formed," says Archibald. "So, stay tuned."
