'Moonshiners': The Remedy For Tickle's Broken Ribs Is Right In Front Of Him (VIDEO)

Tickle probably thought he was making alcohol on "Moonshiners" (Wed., 10 p.m. EST on Discovery) for entertainment purposes. Little did he know that it would come in handy after he missed a jump from a roof onto a truck bed. Instead of landing in the truck, he cracked his ribs over the side of it.

"You're gonna be sore as hell tomorrow," he was told. The unofficial diagnosis -- going to a hospital wasn't even an option -- was three broken ribs. The unofficial prescription was moonshine.

"The cause and the remedy was one and the same," Tickle said. "I got hurt making moonshine, but what's making me feel a whole lot better?" With that, he tipped a glass to the camera and down the hatch it went.

This Nerdy Instrument is Part Atari Console Part Guitar [Video]

The gAtari is a "musical instrument" that basically consists of an Atari 2600 playing pre-programmed tunes, that has been hacked together with a few guitar effects processors. It's kind of like an Atari keytar. The resulting music is scatterbrained weirdness that's impossible to describe. More »

GOP's Bachmann limps to Iowa caucus finish line (AP)

FORT DODGE, Iowa ? Encountering small crowds and fresh viability questions, Republican Michele Bachmann slogged into the final weekend of Iowa caucus campaigning Friday looking for any spark to her flagging bid.

The closing week hasn't been kind to the one-time GOP contender: She's losing staff. She's faced calls to abandon her bid. And she has no money.

The difficulties were evident in two restaurant stops where reporters outnumbered patrons. She got a warm welcome later on in Fort Dodge, where she popped in unannounced on a Iowa State football watching party at a sports bar.

"Our effort wasn't to bring crowds out. We were just dropping in," she said outside a cafe in Early.

The Minnesota congresswoman is at the back of the pack in polls. But she vows to soldier on, even if that means her candidacy will split the vote of pivotal conservatives in Iowa and allow for victories by a candidate who isn't seen as adhering as strongly to GOP orthodoxy ? like Mitt Romney or Ron Paul.

Regarded as a tea party heroine, the only woman in the Republican race has struggled to revive her campaign since her standing dropped shortly after she won a statewide test vote in Iowa. That turned out to be the high point of her campaign.

Iowa Rep. Steve King, one of Bachmann's closest allies in Congress, came to one of Friday's events. He praised her but he stopped short of an outright endorsement in a race that's so far kept him neutral.

"I have not made a commitment on this presidential race but I've made a commitment to this great friend to always be this great friend," King said of Bachmann.

She's spent the final week before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses on a bus tour of the state's 99 counties. Sometimes the crowds barely registered double digits; in other places they spilled out the doors.

But instead of ending the exhausting sprint on a high note, Bachmann found herself facing a new reality: Rick Santorum was the conservative candidate whose standing was rising ahead of the caucuses, not her.

She also found herself feuding with high-level advisers, only the latest to abandon her.

Two top Iowa advisers left the campaign on successive days this week, with her state chairman, Kent Sorenson, quitting and then going so far as to endorse Paul within hours of campaigning with her. A day later, Wes Enos said he was leaving his job as Bachmann's political director.

Furious, Bachmann spent much of Thursday accusing Sorenson of switching allegiances for money. He denied it. But the candidate found herself in a daylong spat rather than hammering home her closing message to voters.

To some, it was another sign of a campaign in free-fall.

"If you can't get your campaign on one page, it's really hard to think you're going to get a country on one page. The timing is horrible," said veteran Iowa Republican strategist David Roederer, who is unaffiliated in this year's race but held top Iowa posts in John McCain's 2008 campaign and George W. Bush's 2000 bid.

By Friday, she deflected questions on the subject and signaled she was ready to move on.

Still, it didn't help that the departures came on top of calls by some Iowa pastors that either she or Santorum leave the race so evangelical voters can consolidate their support and block a victory by Romney or Paul.

She quickly rejected the plea. On Friday, she announced a new roster of 22 pastors helping her turn out the vote.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington who originally liked the idea of a merged campaign, said he's given up on that prospect and will stick with Bachmann. So will Pastor Bill Tvedt of Oskaloosa, even if he knows her chances of winning have taken a hit.

"Maybe she is out of the running at this point," Tvedt said. "I think she can come back. To bail out on the basis of electability is self-defeating to the process."

But even if she stays in the race through Tuesday, it's doubtful she could sustain a campaign beyond that.

Despite her reputation as a prolific fundraiser, she's virtually out of money. Bachmann didn't air a single TV ad in December and won't broadcast one until the day before the caucuses.

Instead, she's rolling out Internet videos, like the one she filmed this week that cast her as the "Iron Lady" of the 21st century.

And she's urging Republicans on the fence to ignore her stagnant or slipping poll numbers ? and Santorum's rise.

It's unclear whether she's having any luck.

Recent college graduate Adam Fischer sized up Bachmann in central Iowa and liked her solidly conservative voting record, but he said he may still opt for Santorum.

"I don't want to become subject to that poll mentality because that's what gets us weak candidates," Fischer said. Then he acknowledged that the one with the head of steam come Tuesday will probably get his vote.

Carole Bennett, MA: The Holiday Counselor's Corner

No New Year's resolutions -- just a new year with goals and aspirations (objectives).

How many years have you heard people say that their New Year's resolution is to do this or stop that or in kind have asked others what their New Year's resolutions are? Why does a date on a calendar have to force someone to change something in their life? Probably something dramatic like the usual chants of losing weight, stopping smoking, quit drinking, find a better job and on and on.

New Year's resolutions rarely work. The adrenaline rush from the moment of the commitment is short-lived. Solid attempts are made for a while, but usually something happens as life once again begins and the same obstacles are presented as were before the holidays.

So how can one make a comfortable, doable resolution? Reach for goals and objectives in a committed, honest manner through preparation and not expectation. You don't need to prove anything to anyone, and sometimes that's more pressure than we want to (or should) give credence to.

One way to start this process in a healthy way is to map out the following:

1) Where were you last year at this time?

Take some quiet time to jot down where you were with your emotions, job, finances, health, personal relationships, etc...

2) Where are you this year?

How did the year unfold for you? Did plans pan out or were you thrown a curveball or two? How did you handle that fork in the road that you weren't expecting? Were the goals (either expected or not) you had set for yourself met, and were they fulfilling?

3) Where would you like to see yourself next year at this time?

Make a DOABLE list that can be accomplished. Write down what you need to do (or not do) in order to see these objectives come to fruition. And what is your time frame? If we just bump along the bottom without a committed schedule, the goal/objective can too easily be lost or forgotten.

If you are dedicated to reaching your personal plateau then make a schedule with specific time frames and days that you will spend contributing to your project. If you want to write a book, carve out x amount of hours, x amount of days to work on your book. Even if you do nothing but research or sit in front of a blank page, you have done what you have planned on doing and I promise will feel accomplished having suited up and showed up.

The key to this exercise is to be honest, do it for yourself and make your objective doable. Saying that you are going to win the lottery is fun and wishful, but frankly a waste of mind power that can be used for something more productive.

Your first holiday alone without the alcoholic/addict

We have read article after article about how difficult and stressful the holidays can be. But being alone on the holidays can be painful and lonely. There are no two ways of getting around it. Maybe this is your first holiday without the alcoholic/addict in your life; maybe somewhere about five months ago you finally realized that you could not continue this life and lifestyle with the alcoholic/addict in your life.

You knew it was the healthy thing to do, even a relief by this break-up; yet being alone on a Saturday night in June is not quite as difficult as alone for the holiday season. Even being surrounded by friends and family can still make one feel like they are alone, and if you are not fortunate to have a strong support group, maybe you are the only one in the canoe, paddling on your own on a lonely holiday stream. Yikes and ouch.

When I experienced one relapse too many from my loved one, I was sad and angry, scared and choked with fear about every aspect of my future. I couldn't help but imagine every person in the world having a wonderful holiday season but me. Of course that's absurd, but our thoughts can get pretty vivid when we have our chin on our buttons.

Is there a happy way to cope with our holiday blues? Honestly, not really. We find ourselves caught up in the "Auld Lang Syne," let bygones be bygones and it's doubly difficult to stay the course that you put into healthy action some time ago. Reliving the past and questioning whether you did the right thing or not to extricate the toxic relationship out of your life is destructive with a zero positive outcome. My father used to say "Don't look back -- you will die of a broken heart."

But these feelings and emotions are real and they hurt; don't deny them and you might need to meet them head on. Sometimes our only option is just slog through it and know that change is a constant and that things will change, hopefully for the more fulfilling and positive.

I found that taking lots of hikes, strolling with my golden retriever to the local hospital for patient visits, and of course journaling were helpful in crawling toward the end of the year. I was on a tight budget, so I had to choose activities that didn't cost money for entertainment or gas.

Hey... Isn't it said that "Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger?" No need to be a hero this time of year and put on a smiling face and a happy disposition for anyone. If you have an emotional tummy-ache then take care of it the best and healthiest way you know how.

Thank you for allowing me to share with you some thoughts and impressions about living (or not), loving (or not) the alcoholic/addict in your life; I'm grateful for your readership and I wish all a new year that's full of growth and renewed self-dignity.

Verizon to charge $2 fee for some methods of bill payment

Verizon fee

We're used to getting nickled-and-dimed by our wireless carriers, but this is just getting ridiculous. Verizon confirmed to PhoneScoop today (update: and issued a press release - link below) that it's set to start charging a $2 "convenieince" fee for paying your bill come Jan. 15. With a few caveats, of course. Here's the breakdown:

You'll be charged the $2 if you:

  • Pay with a credit or debit card online
  • Pay with a credit or debit card via Verizon's call-in channels

Now that's not necessarily a complete stroke of evil by Verizon -- it wouldn't surprise us at all to learn that Verizon's getting charged more for those transactions by whichever service it uses. Passing the buck to the customer isn't new, but nor does it make it any easier to swallow.

The "good" news here is that there are ways to avoid that $2 fee. You can:

  • Pay by electronic check
  • Use auto-pay -- which allows you to pay via  debit or credit card, or electronic check
  • Direct bill pay via your bank
  • In-store payments
  • Verizon gift, rebate or rewards cards
  • An old-school paper check mailed to Verizon

It's pretty clear that Verizon's looking to push people toward automatic bill payments. But we'd rather see Big Red use a carrot than a stick here. Perhaps discounts for using auto-pay instead of penalties for using completely reasonable and accepted payments might be a better way to go, especially given that Verizon is very much in the doghouse of late.

U.S. says China not currency manipulator

Some U.S. politicians have argued that China has gained an unfair competitive edge in global markets by keeping the yuan artificially low to boost exports.

But the Treasury again shied away from taking the more serious step of labeling China a currency manipulator, saying the statutes covering such a designation "have not been met with respect to China."

The value of the yuan, which Beijing manages closely, has risen by 4 percent against the dollar this year and 7.7 percent since China dropped a firm peg against the greenback in June 2010. The appreciation, however, has been too slow in the eyes of the United States.

"The movement of the (yuan) to date is insufficient," the Treasury said in a statement following the release of its semi-annual report to Congress on international economic and exchange rate policies.

"Treasury will closely monitor the pace of appreciation and press for policy changes that yield greater exchange rate flexibility, a level playing field, and a sustained shift to domestic demand-led growth."

The Peterson Institute for International Economics recently estimated the yuan was undervalued by 24 percent against the dollar, down from 28 percent earlier in the year. It attributed the change to both Beijing's policy of gradual currency appreciation and higher Chinese inflation.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said the law that requires the administration to determine whether U.S. trade partners are deliberately undervaluing their currencies is a poor tool to push Beijing on the yuan.

Instead, the United States has tried to use international economic fora, such as the Group of 20 leading nations and the International Monetary Fund, to ramp up pressure on Beijing to move more quickly to a more-flexible currency.

The Treasury Department has not labeled country a currency manipulator since July 1994, when it cited China. A designation would require the United States to step up negotiations with Beijing on the yuan's value.

Apple?s November iPhone 4S launch led to 83 percent increase in app downloads over 2010 (Appolicious)

After releasing the iPhone 4S in November, Apple and its iTunes App Store saw a big jump in app downloads, rising 83 percent over the same period in 2010.

TechCrunch has the report, which states that app market research firm Fiksu measured the volume of app downloads for the top 200 free apps in the iTunes App Store. Fiksu found volume across all those apps increased by 15 percent from October 2011 to November 2011, and also saw that for the first time, free app downloads broke the 5 million-per-day mark, rising as high as 5.65 million downloads per day in November. October?s record high mark was 4.91 million downloads.

App downloads had been on the decline since around June, as GigaOM reports, in a trend attributed to iPhone owners waiting for the iPhone 4S to hit store shelves. Apple saw a similar decline in iPhone sales in the space between the device?s traditional launch window in the summer and the iPhone 4S? fall launch.

The new iPhone has been extremely popular to date in lots of different markets. Predictions have Apple selling 30 million more iPhones in the last quarter of 2011 than previously expected. Apple has been expanding extensively in places like China and South America to bring the iPhone to new customers, and as one might expect, when those new customers get a shiny new iPhone, they immediately download a lot of new apps.

Fiksu also put some of the blame for the spike in app downloads on the latest version of Apple?s iOS mobile operating system, iOS 5. Apple released the software just ahead of the iPhone 4S and it added a lot of new features, both for the new device and for existing iPhone versions. As a result, developers pushed a number of new updates for their apps during the same period, to add in new functionality like iCloud support. Many apps, especially games, were optimized to take advantage of the powerful new iPhone 4S, and as a result, lots of apps likely saw increases in popularity and a revival in downloads after the new OS?s launch.

As TechCrunch points out, the download spike shows that there?s still a whole lot of room to expand in the smartphone market. Among cellular phone owners in the U.S., smartphones account for only about 50 percent.?That's a high number on its own, but also remarkable because that means there?s the entire other half of the cell phone market that doesn?t have a smartphone but could, and would also be downloading apps but isn?t. The iPhone 4S likely converted quite a few of those feature phone owners, but the market is still pretty young and there?s huge room for growth.

Heat Beat Celtics 115-107: Norris Cole Comes Up Big (VIDEO)

MIAMI -- Norris Cole stepped to the foul line with 9.3 seconds left, set to clinch the game as cries of "M-V-P! M-V-P" rained down upon him from the sold-out stands.

No, this wasn't a scene from his days at Cleveland State.

Taking over in just his second NBA game ? and with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all on the floor, no less ? Cole scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, including three huge jumpers down the stretch to save the Heat in a 115-107 win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

"You grow up and live for moments like that," Cole said.

James scored 26 points, Wade had 24 points, eight assists and four blocks, and Bosh scored 18 for the Heat, which led by 20 points midway through the third quarter before having its lead twice sliced to three points in the final minutes. And both times, Cole took passes from James and knocked down jumpers, keeping short-handed Boston at bay.

"He's got savvy," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Great pickup."

Ray Allen scored 28 points on 8 for 12 shooting for the Celtics, while Rajon Rondo finished with 22 points and 12 assists and Keyon Dooling scored 18 off the Boston bench.

Through two games, Miami (2-0) has trailed only once ? by two points, for all of 14 seconds. Boston turned the ball over 24 times, and Miami turned those into 33 points.

"Any team you turn the ball over that much they're going to score on you," Allen said. "We just have to settle in on both ends of the floor. Whether you score or not, they're going to run down your throats."

Cole's jumper with 3:01 left gave Miami a 108-98 lead, most of which disappeared in the next 59 seconds, thanks to Dooling ? a former Heat guard. He scored seven straight points, including a 3-pointer with 2:02 remaining, cutting the Heat's lead to three. And when Boston got a stop on the next Miami trip, the Celtics looked for Dooling again.

But Wade stepped in front of a pass intended for Dooling, starting a play where James found Cole for another jumper, and Miami's cushion was back to 110-105 with 1:31 to play. A half-minute later, Cole struck again to restore the five-point edge, and Miami had the win.

"He's earned their respect," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Even though it's been a short period of time, about three weeks, because he's pure, he's all about the team. He's mature ... and he gets them the ball. You're always a popular guy when you find people when they're open."

Boston was again without forward Paul Pierce (bruised right heel), who worked out both Monday and Tuesday and is getting closer to a return. It won't come on Wednesday, however ? the Celtics have already ruled him out of that game in New Orleans, but there is some hope of Pierce being in the lineup when Boston makes its home debut against Detroit on Friday.

Maybe spurred by the new Eastern Conference championship banner hanging from the rafters, Miami came out flying.

A short bank shot by Wade made it 26-15 at barely the midpoint of the first quarter, setting the tone for an offensive bonanza the likes of which Boston typically doesn't allow. After a late flurry ? James setting up Wade for a lob, Wade missing at the rim but James trailing for a tip-in being perhaps the most impressive of Miami's highlight reel to close the second quarter ? the Heat took a 69-54 lead into the locker room.

That represented the most first-half points allowed by the Celtics since Feb. 8, 2005, according to STATS LLC.

Six straight points by James made it 85-65 midway through the third, and Miami was well on its way to a blowout. But then everything changed ? Boston went to a zone, and Miami's offense stopped in its tracks.

Feasting on Miami's second unit, with James being the only starter on the floor, the Celtics closed the third on an 18-6 run to make it 91-83 entering the fourth. The Heat missed their last eight shots of the quarter ? after having missed 14, total, in the first 32 minutes of the game.

Boston never got the lead down the stretch, though, thanks to Cole.

"We have confidence in whoever's on the floor at that time," James said. "For him to make those shots and come up big in a game like that, give credit to him."

NOTES: After two games, the Heat have 131 points in first halves this season. After three games last season, Miami had 130 first-half points. ... Celtics F Chris Wilcox didn't play in the second half because of a bruised left shoulder. X-rays were negative. ... The Heat said the luster of the matchup wasn't hurt by Pierce not being available. "We play the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back," Wade said. ... Celebrity sightings included Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, rapper Rick Ross and retired tennis star Boris Becker.

Lawyer says soldier shooting client was attacked

In this Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011 photo, Suzanne Sullivan holds a photo and dog tag of her son Christopher Sullivan, an Army soldier, at her home in San Bernardino, Calif. Sullivan, who survived a suicide bombing last December while serving in Afghanistan, is now in critical condition after a gunman shot him during his homecoming party Friday, Dec. 23, in San Bernardino. Police on Monday, Dec. 26, arrested Ruben Ray Jurado in connection with the shooting that critically wounded Sullivan. (AP Photo/The Sun, Gabriel Luis Acosta) LOS ANGELES TIMES OUT; VENTURA COUNTY STAR OUT; RIVERSIDE PRESS-ENTERPRISE OUT; THE VICTOR VALLEY DAILY PRESS OUT

(AP) ? The lawyer for the California man charged with the attempted murder of an Afghanistan war veteran said his client was under attack when gunfire rang out.

Ruben Ray Jurado, 19, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and multiple sentencing enhancements for using a firearm in the shooting that critically wounded Christopher Sullivan, 22, a Purple Heart recipient. Jurado was scheduled to be arraigned by video conference call Wednesday afternoon but that was postponed until Thursday morning when Jurado asked to attend the hearing in person.

Sullivan was home for the holidays at a homecoming party when a fight began over football, authorities said. When Sullivan moved to break it up, gunfire broke out, police said.

Defense attorney Michael J. Holmes said Tuesday that he wanted to talk to his client and the district attorney before commenting further on the case.

"It appears that he was being attacked and he was on the ground and was being kicked in the back, stomach, the head, and that is consistent with the injuries that I observed," Holmes said. "It is alleged at that point that Mr. Sullivan was shot."

Authorities said Jurado, who had played football with Sullivan in high school, began arguing with Sullivan's brother over football teams at the party Friday night and then punched him. Sullivan intervened and Jurado pulled a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting Sullivan in the neck, police said.

Sullivan remains in critical condition. His relatives said the gunfire shattered his spine and left him paralyzed from the neck down.

"He's opening his eyes more," his 20-year-old brother, Brandon Sullivan, told The Associated Press. "We're just waiting day by day."

Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year while serving with the military in Afghanistan. He suffered a cracked collarbone and brain damage in the attack and had been recovering in Kentucky, where he is stationed, before coming home for the holidays.

Sullivan was a wrestler and football player in high school in San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. He had nine months to go in the military and then planned to become a firefighter or police officer. He always liked to help people, his brother said.

"Say there was a person at school who never had friends or nothing ? Chris would be the person who would go up to him and try to be his friend. He didn't like people to feel alone," Brandon Sullivan said. "He always had a smile on his face."

Review: 2012 Ford Edge Limited EcoBoost

The sport utility vehicle became an endangered species not long after fuel prices began to skyrocket. But while vehicle buyers changed their shopping habits, they didn't actually stray that far from the SUV formula. Many of today's hottest-selling vehicles are crossovers; essentially the same tall wagons as the SUV, but with a lighter unibody chassis.

Among other things, the CUV promised to deliver superior efficiency, and while some improvement has been evident, in many cases, the genre's fuel savings have failed to impress. A good case in point is the Ford Edge. When Ford's two-row CUV entered the market in 2007, it managed only 24 miles per gallon on the highway, and many buyers struggled to hit 20 mpg in mixed driving cycles. There were plenty of reasons for its unimpressive efficiency. Most crossovers remain substantially heavier than a comparable four-door sedan, and with plenty of frontal area, they don't exactly slice through the wind. But perhaps the biggest issue has been unevolved powertrains.

Ford thinks it has the answer to that problem in the form of its new EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Ford is using the compact, turbocharged mill in a variety of crossovers, including the 2012 Ford Edge, and we sampled a well-equipped Edge Limited to see how effective the Blue Oval's engine downsizing strategy is going.

Our Dark Blue Pearl Metallic tester in Limited trim carried a base price tag of $34,915 that rises to $35,910 by ticking the EcoBoost option box. Ford doesn't mess around when it comes to the Limited trim: Standard accoutrements include leather-trimmed and heated seats up front, a 10-way power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, SYNC infotainment, a 390-watt Sony sound system, back-up sensors and a rear view camera.

Our Edge was also packed with some of Ford's top options, including the 2.0-liter EcoBoost upgrade, Ford's excellent navigation system ($795), and BLIS blind-spot detection ($485). This Edge Limited also included the Drivers Entry Package ($895), which adds remote start, push-button start and a power rear lift gate. Also making the scene was Ford's much-maligned MyFord Touch system ? in this guise, it includes a pair of 4.2-inch LED screens in the gauge cluster and five-way steering wheel controls. With all options present and accounted for, our tester came in at $38,910.

The draw for this Edge Limited is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which is a $995 option compared to the capable and relatively efficient 3.5-liter V6. The extra coin will deliver 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. That isn't as much punch as the 285 horsepower 3.5-liter V6, but the real story comes with a twist ? the turbo 2.0 boasts 17 more lb-ft than its bigger, naturally aspirated brother, and it arrives in full force at 3,000 rpm (the V6's torque doesn't max out until 4,000 revs).

That extra pull is evident from behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EcoBoost four provides good straight-line acceleration, with a 0-60 time that we estimate to be just over seven seconds. The EcoBoost also weighs a bit less, tipping the scales at 3,998 pounds ? 58 fewer pounds than a front-drive V6 model. With torque that comes on early in the revband, the EcoBoost feels even quicker than any instrumented testing might suggest ? at least until hitting the freeway. When we tested the V6-equipped Edge about a year ago, passing acceleration felt a bit stronger at highway speeds. The boosted four-cylinder also doesn't sound quite as pleasant as the V6, but noise levels aren't obtrusive.

2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost engine

The 58-pound weight advantage isn't particularly significant, so there isn't much difference in the handling department between the V6- and EcoBoost-powerd Edges. In fact, the Edge is still a bit of a porker, as this midsize CUV is a few sandwiches shy of two tons. Luckily, the EcoBoost powertrain has plenty of punch, and at 76 inches across, the Edge is all kinds of wide, which helps minimize body roll even when the roads get curvy. The Edge also employs a stiff yet forgiving chassis aided by MacPherson struts up front and an independent rear suspension with trailing blade, integrated knuckle and lateral links. We were a bit surprised to learn that Ford has taken a pass on electric power assisted steering here in favor of a traditional hydraulic setup, as moving to EPAS likely would've helped conserve a bit more fuel. The upside is that the variable-assist unit is accurate and quite natural in feel.

The real test of the EcoBoost four-cylinder isn't how it goes and stops, however. We remain more interested in the Edge's fuel economy, because the Environmental Protection Agency estimates suggest this diminutive powertrain should hit 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. Those are the kind of numbers that we might have hoped for from a midsize sedan only a few years ago, but the Edge manages to find membership in the 30 mpg club in spite of the fact that it's the widest vehicle in its segment, weighing in at 238 pounds more than the longer Toyota Venza. While the lion's share of the improvement is due to the smaller engine, Ford's engineers have also executed a number of meaningful tweaks to the rest of the Edge package, including fitting low rolling-resistance tires along with revised rocker panels and active grille shutters for improved aero. Unlike its three-row sibling, the Ford Explorer, towing capacity remains the same regardless of which engine you choose: 3,500 pounds.

2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost headlight2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost fog light2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost wheel2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost taillight

Impressively, we were even more pleased with our real-world mileage. We averaged a surprising 25.1 miles per gallon during our week of driving. For comparison's sake, we averaged 21.9 mpg in the 3.5-liter-equipped Edge, itself a reasonable number. Assuming our 3.2 mpg difference is representative of real-world fuel economy, is the EcoBoost's efficiency increase worth $995? If we assume 12,000 miles per year and 87 octane gas sits at $3.50/gallon, the EcoBoost owner can expect to pay $1,673 for fuel each year. The equivalent 3.5-liter V6 owner faces a $1,917 tab ? $245 more than the EcoBoost model. That means the $995 price tag of the EcoBoost model should pay for itself in about four years or about 50,000 miles. That's far from an immediate return on investment, but it's not bad and the equation could get more favorable if fuel prices spike.

The boosted four cylinder makes for fun and efficient motoring, and the experience is only enhanced by a rich and inviting cabin. Having been comprehensively upgraded for 2011, the Edge interior now boasts soft-touch materials everywhere occupants care to touch, including a terrific steering wheel and leather-clad shifter, plus a very cushy dash. The seats are also a plush affair, with enough cushion to find a place of honor in most living rooms, and enough bolstering to hug torsos without making drivers feel like weekend racers. The Edge also scores high praise for its roominess. Second row passengers are treated to gobs of hip room and a cavernous 39.6 cubic inches of legroom. Behind the second row 60/40 bench seat is 32 cubic feet of cargo room, which can be more than doubled to 68.9 cubic feet when the seats are folded. In other words, there's more than enough space to haul that big screen television you've been eyeballing.

Our tester also came equipped with the aforementioned mother lode of technology. We're big fans of SYNC and Ford's intuitive hands-free calling setup, and the Sony audio system packs a serious punch. Our second attempt at MyFord Touch was a bit less confusing than the first, as we had a better handle on the four quadrants of information and their corresponding color coding. Phone connections are orange, navigation is green, entertainment is red and climate is blue. Easy-peasy, right? We also became accustomed to the five-way controls on the steering wheel, which helped us keep our hands on the wheel.

Unfortunately, we still found ourselves staring at the center console in order to sift through the heating and ventilation controls. Call us cavemen, but we prefer actual buttons and knobs to switchgear that can't be easily discerned by touch. And when we used the steering wheel controls, we found ourselves gazing into the 4.2-inch screen on the right side of the gauge cluster trying to find the optimal settings. Not good, and a bit dangerous as well. Voice control is one way around the problem, but we often struggled to find the right words to satisfy the computerized voice on the other end ? a potentially frustrating distraction in its own right. Overall, we much prefer driving models not fitted with the powerful yet cumbersome interface. We're thinking MyFord Touch will take weeks for new owners to get reasonably comfortable with, and we hope the system gets easier to use with the major upgrade scheduled early next year.

2012 Ford Edge EcoBoost rear 3/4 view

All-in-all, the 2012 Edge with EcoBoost takes a terrific midsize crossover to the next level. The 2.0-liter turbo proved to be a joy to exercise, and our happiness was guilt-free thanks to impressive fuel economy for a CUV this size and weight. Mix in its attractive, broad-shouldered stance, and it's clear that the 2012 Edge deserves to be a powerhouse in the midsize crossover field. Here's hoping that MyFord Touch is friendlier in version 2.0, because it's the only major blemish here.

Tsunami debris already arriving, B.C. mayor says

The coastal community of Tofino, B.C., spent the Christmas season mentally preparing for the grim task of collecting, sorting and cataloguing debris from the tsunami that devastated parts of coastal Japan early this year.

Mayor Perry Schmunk is certain that items that were washed away in the March 11 disaster in northern Japan have already made it to B.C. shores, in particular at the surfing capital of Long Beach.

"Definitely this stuff is increasing in incidence that is coming ashore," Schmunk said, pointing to some lumber with Japanese export stamps on it.

Although plastic water bottles with Japanese labels began washing ashore near Tofino at the beginning of December, some locals believed them to be typical ocean garbage.

Schmunk said that what has appeared since then is definitely not the normal garbage.

"There [are] some personal items starting to show up, things like a toothbrush, socks ? that sort of thing. Again, not the typical bottles," he told CBC News on Monday.

He said it is just the tip of a massive amount of debris predicted to be shifted by ocean currents toward the B.C. coast in 2014.

"We are starting communication with the other government agencies because, potentially, this will be a much bigger problem than us at the municipal level can respond to," Schmunk said.

B.C. has jurisdiction over hazards, bodies

The B.C. government has said it will begin working with national and municipal officials in January to prepare for arrival of the debris, but the task could be overwhelming even with strong federal co-operation and support.

"We're starting those conversations with the different agencies involved, namely, the Ministry of Environment, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Integrated Land Management Bureau, which in B.C. is responsible for the beaches themselves, and the Emergency Management Agency of B.C."

Schmunk said that the province has jurisdiction over many potential health and safety matters that could arise, including testing debris for possible radioactive contamination from the Fukushima nuclear reactor ruptures.

The province would also handle human remains that are found anywhere on the coast.

As many as 21,000 people were killed in the earthquake and tsunami, and the bodies of approximately 8,500 of those have not yet been recovered.

Schmunk said that many of the personal effects that wash ashore could have belonged to the victims, and would hold a great deal of significance for surviving family members.

"We'll look to handle a lot of what could come ashore with some great sensitivity," Schmunk said.

"We are asking everybody that does come in contact with anything that does come ashore that they deal with it with respect."

Website of photos proposed

Volunteers in and around the town of Tofino have so far been collecting debris combed from the beaches, but it isn't a large volume so far.

Schmunk has proposed that photos of the finds could be posted online.

"Some of the residents in town, myself included, have photographed these items and we'll probably create a common website so that people can search through these photos," he said.

"There's definitely the potential for some of the stuff that comes ashore to be of significant personal value."

In October, scientists in Hawaii estimated that as much as 18 million tonnes of material could have been washed into the ocean, and estimated the debris field to be spread out over an area the size of the state of California.

India Ink: Frustration and Hope at Hazare's Fast in Mumbai

December 27, 2011, 8:04 am By VIKAS BAJAJ

Kushal Malde, a 23-year old who works at an Indian bank in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

As Indian lawmakers began a much-anticipated debate in Parliament about a bill to create a new anti-corruption agency known as the lokpal, activist Anna Hazare began a fast in Mumbai on Tuesday. He started his day by paying his respects at a statue of Gandhi in the coastal neighborhood of Juhu before arriving at a big, open ground at the Bandra Kurla Complex in the center of the city that is often used for fairs, rallies and concerts.

The size of the crowd at the rally ground was modest relative to the crowds he attracted during his last fast in August at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.

In Mumbai today, the ground was divided in two, with one section reserved for women and the other for men. The section for men was about half full when I arrived in the early afternoon and proceeded to fill up over the several hours I spent there, with a few thousand protestors. The women?s section, however, had few people and many of them were men and boys.

We?ve posted video interviews with two of the several protestors I spoke to about why they had come to the rally in the middle of a workday: banker Kushal Malde, above, and web designer Ajay Verma, below:

Florida kitty found 2,000 miles away in Colorado

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) ? An orange striped tabby cat that ran away from its home in Florida has been found ? more than 2,000 miles away in Colorado.

The Naples Daily News reports that Daniel Johns adopted the kitty in Florida in June and named him Waylon. The feline escaped through a hole in a dryer vent and Johns thought he'd lost Waylon forever.

It's unclear how the kitty made its way to Colorado. A good Samaritan found Waylon on a snowy street Wednesday and brought it to the Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden, Colo. Workers at the shelter discovered that Waylon had a microchip ? and that his registered owner was in Florida.

Johns says he's working to bring Waylon back to Florida.

Individual Health Insurance Companies | South Shore Prolife

Individual Health Insurance Companies

You may be asking yourself, what?s individual health insurance? Individual health insurance companies offer insurance to a single person instead of groups. Why is that? Some people don?t have access to group health insurance either because their employer has no medical benefits or if he or she is unemployed. Individual health care companies can be very helpful to these people.

Health insurance companies have quotes and rates made for individuals. Picking the right La Quinta insurance can help you save thousands of dollars in medical expenditure. To find the best company for you, then simply take the time and research the best rates from a company.

You can actually find health insurance companies online. You can use health insurance company websites, insurer websites, and even search engines to find rates among insurance companies. Check their sites to see if you can get quotes online.

There?s a variety of options to choose on the internet, but you can also ask people you know for any recommendations. Being referred by someone you can trust will make you feel confident that the company will give you fair quotes.

You may be asking yourself, where do I even start in choosing the right La Quinta Insurance company? There are some things to consider in choosing an insurance provider. The company will need to know your family?s medical history, your medical records, and how often you go to the doctor. Gauge your budget on how much you can afford to pay the insurance company.

Always consider your budget before signing up. For premium, prepare to shell out a few hundred dollars a month for a family plan.

Don?t feel bad if you can?t understand the quotes and insurance jargons from insurance companies. Sometimes it takes a professional La Quinta insurance agent to make the right decision. Don?t be shy in asking them questions about policies and terms. You must know how much you need to pay under special circumstances. Don?t forget to consider special coverage from health insurance companies for expected future expenses.

Make sure that the rates that you get from these health companies are not only fair, but legit. Don?t just settle for cheapest. It?s important that you get the most reliable La Quinta insurance company.? Don?t forget: in this day and age, medical expenses can be a pain.

Fire Ravages North Tulsa Church On Christmas Eve

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa firefighters battled?a structure fire at?a north Tulsa church early Saturday. Crews were called to the?Cornerstone FWB Church?shortly after 10 a.m.

Neighbors gathered outside to watch the longtime church go up in smoke.

When crews arrived at the church, heavy smoke was pouring from the attic. Firefighters searched the building and found no one inside, according to Public Information Officer Stan May of the Tulsa Fire Department.

The initial attack on the fire was hampered by problems with the water supply.

"Firefighters were almost to the seat of the fire when we lost our water supply and had to pull the firefighters out for a little bit to re-establish the water supply," he said. "By the time they got back in, it had continued to spread in the attic."

A back-up crew hooked up a secondary line to another hydrant, he said.

Thick?smoke could be seen billowing from the structure in the 4900 block of East Latimer, near Admiral and Yale, for over an hour. May said the blaze appeared to have started in the southeast corner of the building's attic, but the cause will be determined by fire investigators.

Church members were quickly on scene trying to clean up items including a wooden pulpit and Nativity scene.

"This is a shock," said Donald Phelps, who plays piano?at the church. He?was married in the church in 1965.

"At least nobody was there," he said.

"Well, I was starting to cry earlier. I'm still on the verge of it," Phelps said. "My son was baptized here. My mother died last year ? I was going through her stuff earlier, and she had a certificate from when I went to Vacation Bible School here when I was a kid."

Onlookers, including several church members who rushed over, were helpless as the church caved in.

"There's a lot of memories that's going to go along with the loss, but at the same time, we can build new ones and trust in the Lord," said church leader Shawn Rogers.

"We're still going to serve the Lord and we're still going to be glad and happy on this Christmas Eve, on Jesus' birthday."

The church has a secondary building where they will be able to hold services.

On Sunday, the church is holding its candlelight Christmas service at 11 a.m. That service will be held in the family life building next to the church.
