Anti-Aging Choices and Decisions - Fitness After 40

By Donovan Baldwin

I am sure that most of us realize that in many parts of our lives, including the part where we grow older and begin to notice it, there are things over which we have control things over which we have only some control, and those over which we have no control at all.

Looking back over our lives from that time called "old age", we see many spots where our money, our careers, our relationships were changed by things that happened...or could have been changed by those that didn't. While many of these just happened, I once lost a dream job because of a typographical error in a government document, many changes were the result of choices we made. Maybe even most changes.

Choices are both the ultimate outcomes, and instigators of decisions. We don't always have control of all aspect of the choices available to us, but we do have control over the decisions. Which choice decide on, however, is ours and is often selected without consideration for the ultimate outcomes.

In his book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", Stephen Covey puts being proactive at the start of the list.

This is true in many aspects of life whether you are talking about getting into the "right" university, making your first million before age 40, or eventually retiring at a resonable age in good health and with a comfortable income.

Even though making the right decisions ahead of time is probably the best strategy for a long and healthy life, deciding to make those decisions even after you are in your older years can still be effective in increasing your odds of living longer and enjoying it more. You can slow down and even perhaps reverse the aging process.

So, when it comes to the choices you might face, what sorts of anti-aging decisions might be availble to you? Keep in mind, by the way, that while many of the decisions may be based on desires and intentions linked to age, many of the choices are the same ones faced by twenty-year-olds, forty-year-olds, and sixty-year-olds.

What should I eat?

What about exercise?

How much sleep should I get?

Here's the good news: Most of the decisions you make about your health and life in your 60's are pretty much the same as the ones you should have been making in your 40's. Still, the sooner you begin making them, the more they will affect your life in the future.

Think of it like investing. If you can begin putting aside a given amount of money on a regular schedule in your 20's, you will have a lot more money in your 60's than the person who did not begin putting aside the same amount until their 40's.

Even so, when it comes to health and longevity, beginning late in life is better than not beginning at all.

So, what decisions should you make?

Nutrition
Do not diet. Avoid sugar, products containing sugar, and foods containing empty carbs. Eat foods high in fiber. Keep an eye on calories. Make sure you have good sources of protein in your diet.

Here's a recommendation, by the way: Go to the library or book store and learn a bit about the glycemic index. It's a great way to manage weight and improve health without going on some nutty diet.

Exercise
Don't over do. Especially as you age, it becomes easier to injure yourself or just plain get fed up if you try to do too much too soon. While your goal is about 30 minutes of physical activity just about every day, you don't have to do all of that at first. Build up to it. Find different activities that help you get the amount of activity you need. Find at least a few that you really enjoy doing.
Supplements
Really, the only supplement you should need will be a daily multivitamin. While experts will tell you that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from a well-balanced diet, how many people do you know who actually eat that way. Also, as we age, our bodies find it harder to access and use the nutrients available in the food we eat, and, for various reasons, we tend to get a little sloppy in our eating habits and schedules.

Sleep
The old recommendation of eight hours a night has been proven a good one by recent research. As we age, sleep gets broken up and we may need a little extra sack time.

Friends and Family
Stay connected. Many people who end up in poor health or sitting in a rocking chair in the corner muttering to themselves get there just because they are not linked up to enough people. Connections keep us in the real world.

Mental Activity
Keeping your brain active is just about as important as an anti-aging strategy as physical activity. Challenging your brain with puzzles is just one way to keep it "young". Learning new skills are an excellent way to keep the brain cells firing on all, or at least most, cylinders. Take a trip. It has been shown that visiting new places, experiencing new customs and activities, learning new languages, and even reading the map can help the brain resist the aging process.

Those are just a short list of the anti-aging decisions you can make. There are many more, more than can be covered in a short article like this one. Go do some research on your own...even that will help keep your brain and body younger.

Home Improvement Pointers And Practices For All - Energy Efficiency

There is no guide that has every single step for each project you may want to do, so you should be prepared to do research if needed. The following article contains helpful information you can use when considering home improvement.

You can live in your home while renovating if you do it room by room. This will save you a lot of money. This will mean having breathing space to live comfortably, unless you are improving the only bathroom. You can always consider living with friends in order to still save money.

It?s very easy to dress pillows for a teenager?s room. Trendy shirts, pants, and other old clothes can be made into decorative pillowcases. Personalize your teen?s room and add some spice without spending a lot of money.

Find a way to remove all of the debris. The debris will get in your way unless you make plans ahead of time. Try renting a dumpster or finding someone you know with a large truck. Use these to clear out debris so you can get on with home improvement.

Vinyl decks have seen a rise in popularity. However, if you have this deck, you should ensure you are cleaning the surface of the deck at least two times per year in order to maintain its good appearance and ensure it will last for many years. Fall and spring are both good seasons to give your vinyl deck a sweep.

A simple home improvement that anyone can do is painting. Fresh paint can quickly and cheaply make a house look brand new. When you are considering selling your home, repainting your home will increase its appeal to potential buyers.

When you reroof, be sure to use a light colored or white shingle or tile. This lighter color helps reflect light, making your attic and the rest of your home cooler. This ensures you?re not spending a lot on air conditioning.

Use fruits and flowers to brighten up your kitchen. Your kitchen will come to life with a beautiful flower arrangement or a generous bowl of fresh fruit. It is a very inexpensive fix to help brighten up your kitchen. A bouquet will lighten your spirit every time you look at it.

One of the most expensive things a homeowner can do is to replace the roof. Get estimates from three different roofing companies and check references as well. There are numerous new options in roofing such as new materials and new styles of shingles, as well as metal roofs, which are making a comeback. Ask your contractor which one he thinks is best.

Homeowners should never hire unlicensed contractors to work on their home improvement jobs. Certification is required in every state for contractors and sub-contractors. These laws help to cut down on fraudulent contractors, but a homeowner still has to use their own good judgement. Also, contractors who do not have the necessary licenses probably also do not have sufficient insurance coverage.

Remember your environment whenever you are making improvements to your home. It might not make any sense to put a pool in Alaska, etc. Stick to what is liked, and don?t reach outside of what local climate allows.

Make sure you find out a definitive answer on the time it will take for your contractor to do the work. Contractors may find it more lucrative to finish jobs quicker. They sometimes rush workers in order to get them off to other jobs. This could be bad because the contractors could attempt to charge extra for overtime that wasn?t really needed.

Unless you know a lot about electrical systems, it is best to leave that to a professional. A professional can give you the available options and can make any changes needed. If you know nothing about electric work and try, you may do more harm than good.

Nearly each and every home owner needs to make a few important renovations. The real question here is whether or not they will be successful. There are so many homes out there that have undergone really bad home improvement projects because they were not informed. Don?t have a home that fits into this category. Use what you have learned in order to do a lot of improvements.

Lawmakers Slammed For Resolution Equating Israel Protests With Hate Speech

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A state lawmaker on Wednesday promised to introduce a fix to an Assembly resolution that stirred controversy a day earlier because it urged California colleges and universities to crack down on demonstrations against Israel.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal said she would work on a resolution that affirms free speech rights on campus when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

"I'm not sure what all it's going to say, but I think it will boil down to a celebration of the First Amendment," the Long Beach Democrat said in a statement. "And it will make clear in no uncertain terms that students in our universities should feel safe to have differing opinions."

Lowenthal and 66 of the Assembly's 80 lawmakers provoked a storm of criticism after they approved a resolution Tuesday that condemned anti-Semitism but also asked administrators at California's public colleges and universities to combat anti-Israel actions.

Republican Assemblywoman Linda Halderman did not mention Israel when she introduced House Resolution 35, which is symbolic and does not carry policy implications.

Most of the instances of anti-Semitism the resolution cited were related to the Israel-Palestine debate on college campuses. Among other things, it condemned the campaign to pressure the University of California system to divest from Israel and the suggestion by some students that Israel is a "racist" state.

Free-speech advocates and Muslim groups took umbrage because the resolution appeared to label criticism and protest of Israel as anti-Jewish hate speech. On Wednesday, several groups sent letters to lawmakers condemning the resolution, including the Council on American Islamic Relations, the National Lawyers Guild and Jewish Voice for Peace.

Adel Syed, a spokesman for the council, applauded Lowenthal's quick response and reiterated the group's initial dismay with Tuesday's resolution.

"We're certainly looking forward to seeing a resolution early next session that will reassure college students of their First Amendment rights, especially those with dissenting opinions on critical topics such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said. "No individual, organization or government agency should have the power to stifle legitimate debate on college campuses."

Lowenthal said she regretted that the resolution had drawn controversy but also noted that Halderman, its author, lost family in the Holocaust.

"If she overshot the mark, I'm certainly not going to criticize her for it," Lowenthal said.

Halderman, who is retiring at the end of this legislative session, dismissed critics' concerns.

"I'm unclear why there is such an uproar over a resolution that simply protects students from victimization based on religious faith," she said.

The Fresno Republican's resolution urged educators to take action against anti-Semitism with "due respect" for the First Amendment.

Pro-Palestinian protests are a fixture of many University of California campuses and sometimes include attention-grabbing stunts such as simulated checkpoints.

Apple's Win Over Samsung Is The First Step In Its 'Thermonuclear ...

Score this round in the battle for world domination: Apple (AAPL) 1, Google (GOOG) 0.

While Apple won a billion-dollar jury verdict last week in a patent dispute with Samsung, experts say the trial was just one front in a broader war between the Cupertino computer-maker and its Mountain View rival, Google, whose Android mobile software outranks Apple?s as the world?s leading smartphone platform.

The jury?sverdict is widely seen as a setback for the ?Android ecosystem? of hardware manufacturers, including Samsung, and application developers who use Google?s mobile software. But it?s not a death blow, according to industry experts, who say the outcome won?t end a growing rivalry between Apple and Google that extends from smartphones to online maps, books, videos and even tools for seeking information online.

?Samsung is just collateral damage,? said Roger Kay, a longtime industry analyst. ?I think Apple?s going to try to use this victory as a way to beat on Google further.?

Android?s success is vastly important to Google, which developed the software as part of its strategy for delivering lucrative advertising, information andservices to the growing numbers of people who use smartphones and tablets instead of personal computers to go online. Analysts say any blow to Android is a threat to Google?s ability to keep pace with the mobile computing trend.

A nine-member jury in San Jose?s federal court concluded Friday that several of Samsung?s Android-based devices infringed some of Apple?s patented designs and technology. Some experts say the verdict could force Samsung or other manufacturers to change their productsor even negotiate licensing payments with Apple. But several analysts also said that?s unlikely to stop manufacturers from using Android.

The verdict ?is unambiguously negative for Google and the Android ecosystem,? Bernstein Research analyst A.M. Sacconaghi wrote in a report Monday, adding that the outcome is likely to ?embolden Apple?s legal strategy? against other smartphone and tablet-makers.

?That said, we don?t think it?s a game-changing loss for Android,? he added, because the verdict only affects certain older Samsung models sold in the U.S. market, while Android is used in a wide variety of gadgets sold around the world.

Despite the iPhone?s phenomenal success, the number of smartphones sold by all manufacturersusing Android is even larger. Android has become so popular, in part, because Google doesn?t charge device-makers to use the software, which can lower the price for consumers, too. Google makes money by selling ads and targeting services to consumers who use its software, although it closely guards the details of its mobile revenue stream.

Several analysts said it shouldn?t be difficult for Samsung and other smartphone makers to alter designs and replace features that infringe on Apple?s patents.

?None of these patents are impossible to work around,? said Van Baker, a mobile technology expert at the Gartner research firm. ?This won?t require anyone to go back and completely redefine their products.?

Apple?s late CEO, Steve Jobs, launched a series of patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung and other Android device-makers after famously complaining that he felt Google had copied Apple?s iPhone. Jobs vowed to wage ?thermonuclear war? to destroy Android, even though Google maintains it developed Android independently.

While Apple applauded the jury Friday for protecting its intellectual property, Google issued a statement Sunday that essentially cautioned against reading too much into the decision.

?The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don?t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office,? a Google spokesman said. ?The mobile industry is moving fast and all players ? including newcomers ? are building upon ideas that have been around for decades.?

Some observers believe the flurry of lawsuits over mobile software patents will end only when all parties agree to financial settlements, in which some companies agree to pay royalties for others? technology.

Faced with the prospect of paying royalties for using Android, manufacturers might consider switching to software made by Microsoft or someone else, Sacconaghi wrote. But that seems unlikely, he added, since Android is already popular with so many consumers.

Manufacturers will also hesitate to abandon Android?s deep inventory of software applications that run on its platform, he noted. Android has far more apps than Microsoft, though still fewer than Apple.

Speaking 2 languages also benefits low-income children

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Living in poverty is often accompanied by conditions that can negatively influence cognitive development. Is it possible that being bilingual might counteract these effects? Although previous research has shown that being bilingual enhances executive functioning in middle-class children, less is known about how it affects lower income populations.

In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Pascale Engel de Abreu of the University of Luxembourg and colleagues examine the effects of speaking two languages on the executive functioning of low-income children. "Low-income children represent a vulnerable population," says Engel de Abreu. "Studying cognitive processes in this population is of great societal importance and represents a significant advancement in our understanding of childhood development."

Existing research, conducted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults from middle class backgrounds, suggests that knowing two languages may have different effects on different aspects of executive functioning: while being bilingual seems to have a positive influence on the ability to direct and focus attention (control), researchers have found no such benefit for how people encode and structure knowledge in memory (representation). Engel de Abreu and her colleagues hypothesized that this pattern would also hold for younger bilingual children who were low-income.

A total of 80 second graders from low-income families participated in the study. Half of the children were first or second generation immigrants to Luxembourg, originally from Northern Portugal, who spoke both Luxembourgish and Portuguese on a daily basis. The other half of the children lived in Northern Portugal and spoke only Portuguese.

The researchers first tested the children's vocabularies by asking them to name items presented in pictures. Both groups completed the task in Portuguese and the bilingual children also completed the task in Luxembourgish.

To examine how the children represented knowledge in memory, the researchers asked them to find a missing piece that would complete a specific geometric shape. The researchers also measured the children's memory, using two different tasks to see how much visual information the children could keep in mind at a given time.

The children then participated in two tasks that looked at their ability to direct and focus their attention when distractions were present. In the first task, they had to find and match 20 pairs of spacecrafts as quickly as possible, a task that depended on their ability to ignore all the non-matching spacecrafts. In the second task, the children were presented with a row of yellow fish on a computer screen and they had to press a button to indicate which direction the fish in the center was facing. The other fish either pointed in the same or opposite direction of the fish in the middle.

Although the bilingual children knew fewer words than their monolingual peers, and did not show an advantage for representation tasks, they performed better on the control tasks than did the monolingual children, just as the researchers hypothesized.

"This is the first study to show that, although they may face linguistic challenges, minority bilingual children from low-income families demonstrate important strengths in other cognitive domains," says Engel de Abreu.

The researchers believe that the findings could inform efforts to reduce the achievement gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds. "Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."

Tea Discovery class for company team building | Experience Tea

The workplace is now a mecca of different cultures?no matter what the business or profession.? Whether co-workers are new immigrants, temporary visitors, 1st generation or 5th generation, there are more cultural differences than ever before. ?In the human resources world the phrase ?cultural diversity awareness? is gaining more attention as companies look to get the most out of their hired talent while engendering harmony in the workplace.

Not surprisingly, a common cultural link for many people around the world is tea: it is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world.? ?Just thinking about the professionals who come into the Studio to buy tea?the countries represented include: India, Pakistan, France, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, China, Japan, Britain, Australia, Canada, Russia, Croatia?just to name a few.? It?s not just a morning wake-up beverage for many of these people: it is a medium for connection, tradition and hospitality.

To me, companies might be well-served to think about engaging their diverse workgroups in a tea class as a way to open new paths of understanding and respect among workers from different countries.?? Participants learn about history, customs and preferences about tea around the world, in a neutral environment of shared communication?in fact everyone contributes in a tea class and almost no one walks away without learning way more than ever expected.? Importantly, after the class is over and participants have gone back to work, they will continue to have a wonderful medium for connecting.

Tea can be equally intellectual as comforting?and appeals to just as many men as women. ?Tea Discovery has the power to take team-building to a new, and relevant dimension.

Isaac poses risks due to storm surges, heavy rainfall

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac poses risks to life and could cause extensive damage to states along the U.S. Gulf Coast with a storm surge of up to six to 12 feet, U.S. federal emergency officials said on Monday.

"There are some aspects of this storm that are very concerning, particularly storm surge as well as now potentially heavy rainfall across the area of impact," Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate said in a conference call with reporters.

Exploring the Various Types of Real Estate Agents

Whether hiring a real estate agent to help with selling your home or purchasing a new home, you may be surprised to learn that there are many different types of real estate agents to select from. While many real estate agents offer a variety of services, some specialize in just one or two areas. Therefore, before you begin your search, it is a good idea to learn more about the different types of real estate agents and what they have to offer.

The Broker

In general, a real estate broker has more education and experience than a real estate agent. In many states, agents must complete additional schooling and must successfully pass special exams in order to become a broker. Once a broker, the agent can work independently and may oversee other agents.

The Broker Associate

Like the broker, the broker associate has completed whatever requirements the state has in place in order to become a broker. Rather than work independently, however, the broker associate has decided to work for a broker. Broker associate?s typically work for a larger real estate network and may supervise other real estate agents.

The Realtor

Although the terms ?real estate agent? and ?realtor? are often used interchangeably, the reality is that a Realtor is a broker or agent who belongs to the National Association of REALTORS (NAR). ?Members of the NAR must agree to follow an extensive Code of Ethics that is geared toward protecting the customer,? says Realtor Brian Kinkade.

The Buyer?s Agent

Also known as a selling agent, the buyer?s agent works exclusively for the buyer. Therefore, if you are planning to purchase a home, you may wish to hire a buyer?s agent to handle the job. In this way, you can be sure the agent will do everything to help you get the best deal possible. While many agents work for both buyers and sellers, they typically do not work for both during the same transaction.

The Listing Agent

Also known as the seller?s agent, the listing agent is responsible for getting the home sold. Rather than focusing on helping the buyer sell his house at a reasonable price, the listing agent focuses on helping the seller get his house sold at the highest price possible. The listing agent is solely accountable to the person who is selling the home.

The Dual Agent

In states where it is allowed, some real estate agents serve as a dual agent. Dual agents work for both the seller and the buyer on the same transaction. A dual agency can also occur if two agents who work for the same broker are involved with the transaction.

British police deploy in force after lion sighting

LONDON (AP) ? Outside the idyllic English village of St. Osyth, police are hunting a lion.

A small army of officers and tranquilizer-toting zoo experts, along with a pair of heat-seeking helicopters, are spending their Monday combing the woods, ponds, and farmland around the coastal community after a resident spotted what was believed to be a lion lounging in a field of grass.

Where such a beast may have come from is anyone's guess; the local zoo says its animals are accounted for, and police have said a local circus isn't missing any either. As of early afternoon, the force hadn't found any paw prints or droppings, but officers said they were treating the sighting seriously, and so too are St. Osyth's 4,000-odd residents.

"I wouldn't expect to see a lion walking up the high street, but it seems to be very quiet in the village," said Jason Amos, who owns St. Osyth's timber-framed Red Lion pub. "People are taking it very seriously."

The sighting has prompted a media frenzy in Britain, with the Daily Mail tabloid splashing a picture of a snarling lion across its front page and camera crews racing to the historic village, which is built around medieval priory only a couple of miles from England's south coast.

Amos said he'd just seen journalists from Britain's Sky News television broadcasting from outside the pub.

Improbable sightings of dangerous animals are a familiar part of the British news cycle, particularly at the height of summer when journalists struggle to fill papers and news bulletins.

Last year, police in northern England scrambled a helicopter and passengers were stopped from leaving a train after a motorist reported seeing a lion (a hunt turned up nothing). During the riots that hit London in 2011, there were rumors ? quickly disproven ? that a tiger was on the loose in the capital after escaping from the city zoo.

In 2007, the British media went wild over a man who claimed to have photographed a great white shark off the coast of Cornwall, in southwestern England. He later admitted that the pictures were actually taken while on vacation in South Africa, adding that he couldn't believe anyone had been foolish enough to take the hoax seriously.

One small step: Was Neil Armstrong misquoted?

The millions worldwide who watched the Apollo moon landing in 1969 heard Commander Neil Armstrong say, rather ungrammatically,?"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But a 2006 analysis of the audio indicates that the astronaut did not omit the definite article.

By Life's Little Mysteries Staff,?Life's Little Mysteries / August 27, 2012

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong is pictured here, shortly after collecting a sample of lunar dust and rocks. At his feet is the handle for the sample collection tool.

Upon taking a "small step" onto the surface of the moon in 1969, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one-liners. But strangely, what he actually said is far from clear.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // --> When Apollo 11 touched down on the Lunar surface the whole world stopped. Relive the moment when humanity took its giant leap forward.

Listeners back on Earth heard, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But?Armstrong, who died Saturday?(Aug. 25) at the age of 82, maintained afterwards that he actually said something slightly different: "That's one small step for?a?man..."

"It's just that people just didn't hear [the 'a']," Armstrong told the press after the Apollo 11 mission.

That little indefinite article makes a big difference, semantically speaking. Without it, "man" abstractly represents all of humanity, just like "mankind." Thus, the quote is essentially, ''That's one small step for mankind, one giant leap for mankind."?[Listen to 'One Small Step' Quote]

Despite his initial adamance that he got the grammar right by including the indefinite article, Armstrong acknowledged at a 30-year anniversary event in 1999 that he couldn't hear himself utter the "a" in the audio recording of his moonwalk transmission, according to the?Associated Press.

But then, in 2006, computer programmer Peter Shann Ford might have?vindicated Armstrong.

Ford downloaded the audio recording of the moon man's words from a NASA website and analyzed the statement with software that allows disabled people to communicate via computers using their nerve impulses.

In a graphical representation of sound waves of the famous sentence, Ford said he found evidence that the missing "a" had been spoken after all: It was a 35-millisecond-long bump of sound between "for" and "man" that would have been too brief for human ears to hear.

"I have reviewed the data and Peter Ford's analysis of it, and I find the technology interesting and useful," Armstrong said in a statement. ''I also find his conclusion persuasive. Persuasive is the appropriate word."

And so was "a," whether spoken or not.

Form, Function, Comfort, Family? - Fort Bend Lifestyles and Homes

Houston?s sixth Pink Ribbon House?, a designer showcase home built to ?raise the roof? for breast cancer research at The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), did just that. Established in 2003 by the Breast Center Advisory Council at BCM, the Pink Ribbon House? (PRH) project raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research and patient care at BCM through the design, decorating and touring of showcase homes. Since its founding, more than $2.8 million has been raised for breast cancer research at BCM.

Chair of this year?s event, Debby Leighton, and co-chair Mary Sapp Fischer share, ?The story surrounding this year?s house is a combination of perfect timing, personal connections, and family connections.? In previous years, the PRH was built as a spec home, but this year, for the first time, it was built as a custom home designed by Brad Hollenbeck for a young family with three small children.

Homeowners Jeff and Amy Miers couldn?t have been happier. ?We?re thrilled to be building the home of our dreams while also supporting a cause that makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of so many women and their families,? says Amy. Jeff adds, ?This land has special meaning for our family. Several years ago, we purchased the Memorial area house that my grandparents built and lived in since 1960. We hope to live here at least as long as my grandparents, which was more than 50 years.?

The couple salvaged several features from the previous home, including wood from a tree Jeff?s grandparents planted when they bought the house in 1959. The homeowners also repurposed hardwood floors for the office, and 1950?s pink tile and hardware for one of the bedroom suites. The entire structure of the original house ? including slab, appliances, light fixtures and more ? was donated to Habitat for Humanity, which will either recycle the material or use it in the construction of a new home for a family in need.

Jeff and Amy worked closely with an outstanding team of interior designers to create a home for their growing family now and in the years to come. However, they also recognized that this was a showcase home and compromised in many ways to make sure the finished product would represent the creativity and talents of the design teams.

Designed by Hollenbeck Architects, the 2012 Pink Ribbon House? was constructed by Levitt Partnership, Ltd. in a French Country style. The 5,000-square-foot residence features a stone and stucco exterior with shutters, five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, two studies and three fireplaces, as well as a summer kitchen, playroom, three-car garage, game room, and dining room that opens up to a courtyard with a water feature. An impressive list of Houston designers helped to decorate the home and yard, and each took an area as their focus incorporating not only their own unique design touches, but also making sure to keep the entire home?s aesthetic as a dominant influence.

The outdoor space is extraordinary, lending undeniable curb appeal. Strong Landscaping has designed Houston yards since 2004 and their experience is not lost here. The outdoor setting of the PRH is a beautiful corner lot surrounded by magnificent oak trees. Strong explains, ?We wanted to give the yard its own personality by feeding off the home?s French Country flair, so we created a simple tiered design featuring Encore azaleas, miniature boxwood and mini-mondo grass with strategically placed flagstone walkways and landings that are not only functional, but provide interest to the yard.? The courtyard off the formal dining room ? accented with a decorative iron arch and gate as well as a beautiful water urn ? can be enjoyed not only by those sitting in this peaceful area, but also by those in the dining area. The back patio, landing area and side garden are accented with large French Anduze pots planted with ferns and fruit trees.

The home?s exterior design also is extraordinary. Valerie Cook of Valerie Cook Designs, Inc. discloses, ?The early inspiration for the architectural design for this house was the client?s desire to have courtyards off both the living room and quarters and a large front porch. Through the building process an additional courtyard was added off the dining room. Having the house located on a corner lot is another special feature.? She also says that the ?hideaway? staircase and the placement of the windows reflect a gentle playfulness by the architect ? while still maintaining a formality. The French Country style of the house, the paint colors, and the exterior and courtyard stone selections were made to be consistent with this feeling. Valerie adds, ?My design of the custom shutters and door hardware selections throughout the house continue the formal, rich and inviting look that the clients desired. Working in conjunction with the home?s architect, Brad Hollenbeck, enabled me to retain his vision.?

Trisha Dodson of Dodson & Daughter designed the main entry, dining room and powder room. This is the third Pink Ribbon house Trisha has helped to design. She describes the style as comfortable and inviting, yet sophisticated, and she likes to incorporate architectural antiques when the look allows. She explains, ?I wanted to create an inviting entry that would flow into the surrounding rooms. In the dining room the lighting and furniture give a look that is elegant without formality. I used handcrafted wallpaper in the powder room to add the desired pizzazz to the small space.?

Julia Blailock of Blailock Design was responsible for the kitchen, breakfast and family room, along with the outdoor loggia. ?Our goal was to create a flowing open concept space that, while sharing distinct separate functions, would seamlessly flow together in a unified whole.? Interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, further accentuated with different finishes and countertop selections. The focus of the family room is the stone fireplace and media cabinet, beautifully finished by Segreto Finishes. The tall ceilings with stained beams add loftiness to the room, and the straight paneled drapery compliments this feeling.

The mudroom and first floor study were designed by the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law team of Molly Sullivan Levitt and Mollie Oshman of Molly Mollie Interior Design. Their concept statement was, ?Even though our two rooms are exceptionally practical spaces, we wanted our design to be anything but.? Though an ?elegant mudroom? may sound like an oxymoron, that?s exactly what they achieved. The pair also made sure that everything they selected for their two adjoining spaces was in keeping with the home?s architectural style. Mollie Oshman shares, ?From the French-inspired cabinet door designs and antique fabric under glass in the study to the faux finishing and scripted names beneath the family?s bank of ?elegant lockers? in the mudroom, these rooms are an inviting and welcoming transition to the main areas of the home.? Sadly, Molly Levitt passed away unexpectedly in March just before the home opened. Mollie Oshman continues to run their business in Molly?s spirit, honor and dedication.

In addition to the home?s exterior, the playroom and the quarters (bed/bath) were designed by Valerie Cook. In the playroom, which is usually intended for children, Valerie admits she didn?t want this multipurpose space to be age-specific, but rather in keeping with the overall feel of the home: ?I designed it to be fun for the children now and fun for them in later years.? A custom built-in bookcase design was based on the clients? request for a piece that encompasses specific needs while still having something that was a bit out of the ?norm.? Valerie accomplished this by adding metal grid fronts on the cabinet doors and the cabinet finish. Whimsical pops of color, together with her concept for the crown molding and wall faux finish ? inspired by an Escheresque origami art installation ? add to a room that a child or adult would be comfortable in.

For the design in the quarters area of the home, Valerie wanted to create coziness, but with a little bit of ?glam? and the overall feel of a studio apartment. To accomplish this she used silver fabrics for the upholstery and window treatments, as well as stylish, glitzy light fixtures. She clarifies, ?The plaster faux-finished walls, bedding and chair style are a perfect mix of old and new that the clients wanted, and the tile and countertop selections for the bathroom and?kitchenette maintain the design and sophistication of these two spaces.?

Bennett Design Group (BDG), founded by Belinda Bennett, took to task the upstairs family room. Belinda recounts that in preparation for the new house, the owners heartbreakingly cut down one of the original trees ? one that was very meaningful to the family. She says, ?They loved watching squirrels run up and down the large branches of the beautiful tree.? The design team salvaged the large trunk and branches to create a ceiling covered in spliced branches making an interesting texture. Keeping this memory close at hand by recycling it brings new life to their family space. BDG constructed a palette of naturally-inspired elements around the tree of life which served as the central theme of this room?s design.

Julie Dodson, also of Dodson & Daughter, was in charge of designing the master bedroom and bath, along with the mid-level study of the home. This young, hip designer ? who describes her work as ?casual glam?? says, ?Upon my first meeting with homeowner Amy Miers, I paid super close attention to her wardrobe. She was wearing a soft, blushy-peach pleated skirt and a cream-colored top with pearls. Very feminine, which was right up my alley!? Julie was also inspired by wallpaper they found at David Sutherland from Fromental, which she says gave her direction. Because she also wanted the space to reflect a masculine energy for Jeff, she chose a dark wall and ceiling color. Additionally, both masculine and feminine textures were used for balance and interest.

The three children?s rooms and the utility room were completed by Christine Ho of Cho Interiors. She describes her style as classic, timeless, and modern. This style is evident in these rooms, yet each room is also uniquely fun and reflective of each child?s personality and taste. She explains, ?I wanted to give the homeowners a timeless design so that they wouldn?t have to redesign their kids? rooms in a couple of years as the children grow older.? Instead, she selected a classic background and used accessories to create the theme of the room. From the eldest sibling, who is more punk rock-like, to the second child, who is more of a ballerina at heart, to the youngest boy, who likes toy cars and hot air balloons, each room is very different reflecting each child?s emerging personality.

As for the utility room, Christine says, ?I designed the utility room by focusing on the function of this room first. This utilitarian space often gets ignored, yet oddly enough this room is used quite often. I wanted to make sure that the space simplifies household chores while flowing with the rest of the house design.?

The finishes throughout the home are by Leslie Sinclair of Segreto Finishes. Leslie?s philosophy in this home and in all of her designs rests upon the idea that ?upon entering a room, your eyes should not draw a distinction to one element or finish but you should see the surroundings as a whole.? The palette she developed for this project complemented the home?s architecture and overall design. A combination of the cabinet, floor and wall finishes beautifully connect the furnishings, fabrics and surfaces throughout the home, even though each space is decorated by a different designer.

Other unique architectural details of this home are: front and back porches with arched beams, a two-story entry with an antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment, and the study connecting the home?s curved staircase and master bedroom.

This year, the Pink Ribbon House? tour ended on a very high note, bringing in more than $470,000 for research and patient care at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (bcm.edu/breastcenter). The success of the event is attributed to the camaraderie of the team of volunteers, builders, designers and the homeowners who devote countless hours to organizing the event that raises funds and awareness for a very important cause ? breast cancer. For more information, visit bcm.edu/?advance?ment/pinkribbonhouse.

The 2012 Pink Ribbon Home is a French Country dream situated on a large corner lot and shaded by beautifully groomed oak trees.

The two-story entry with its antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment creates an inviting entry that flows effortlessly into the surrounding rooms.

With its warm wood ceiling, stone walls and fireplace, comfortable furniture and dramatic lighting and drapes, it?s hard to believe this outdoor room is actually outdoors!

Simplicity of design and form make a bold statement in the breakfast room. The circular window seat with its plush pillows, the glass table top with its Lucite base, the soft lines of the contemporary chairs and even the singular blue rose on the wall each lend warmth and comfort to this morning place.

In the kitchen, interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, accentuated with different finishes and different countertop selections. The exposed beams, the dropped lighting and the furniture afford just the right touch of drama.

A mudroom can be elegant, as is evident here. Embellished lockers, a pleated table skirt and a gilded mirror help to achieve this sophistication, which spills over into the home office just beyond.

Taking care of the home?s business just seems a little more stylish in this office. Natural light from the window and the chic globe chandelier allow ample lighting above the desk. Smart pleats, extra long drawers and lots of counter and cabinet space keep things both neat and tasteful.

In the home?s formal dining room, the lighting and furniture present a look that is sophisticated and graceful without formality. With the beautiful views from the picture windows and French doors, it?s as enjoyable and feasible to serve breakfast here as well as a formal family dinner.

In this baby boy?s room, baby blues and white are accented with pops of sage green in the drapes and brick red in the rug. The geometric lines of the light fixture add a masculine touch, while the fabric wall behind the bed and the clouds in the recessed ceiling keep things baby soft.

Pretty pink accents, girlish white lace and a glamorous chandelier provide soft femininity to this girl?s room. The diagonal pattern on the recessed ceiling, the pinboard and the drapes ties together the room?s design.

With pastel mint and blue as a backdrop, this white canopy bed bursts with brightness and youthful energy. The mirrored chest of drawers reflects the dramatic combination, while hot pink accent pillows provide just the right pop of color.

This master bedroom serves as a sanctuary for the homeowners. Soft, calming neutrals and a mixture of textures lend both masculine and feminine energy to the space.

Spa-like elegance is the theme in the master bath. The chevron tile pattern, a deep soaking tub and glamorous lighting are tranquil elements of design that go a long way when it?s time to wind down.

First Test: India four wickets away from win (Tea Report)

Hyderabad, Aug 26

India claimed five wickets in the afternoon session to restrict New Zealand to 146/6 at tea on the fourth day of the first cricket Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here Sunday.

The Black Caps still need 134 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

After not losing any wicket in the morning session, the visitors kept losing them at regular intervals, scoring only 53 runs in 27 overs.

Pacer Umesh Yadav took his second wicket of the match as he trapped Brendon McCullum (42) in front of the stumps. However, a review of the decision showed that the batsman had edged the ball on to the pad. A furious McCullum left the ground shaking his head.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who clinched six wickets in the first innings, was again in action as he bowled Kiwi skipper Ross Taylor for seven.

Ashwin also despatched Daniel Flynn for 11 after he trapped him in front of the stumps.

A splendid one-handed catch by Virender Sehwag got Ashwin his third scalp. James Franklin, at five, edged one to backward short-leg which a diving Sehwag caught just before tea was called.

The 3 R's To Improving Your Marriage Relationship by Roger D. King

Living in a society that stresses "Look out for number one", there appears to be an over abundance of "Number One's". Who is "Number One" to you? Do you consider yourself "Number One", or is there a "Number One" in your life? Married couples should have a "Number One". Physically speaking, a married couple has a "Number One" - their spouse! Spiritually speaking the married couples' "Number One" should be Jesus Christ! Often times couple who may be struggling with different marital "stresses" look at one another to find fault and somewhere to place blame. Is it your spouse's fault? More times than none, it's probably your own fault. Why? Where is your focus? What are you focusing on in your marriage covenant? Is it the "Holy Contract" that you made with your spouse and God? It's important to keep in mind the seriousness of that agreement! All too often we hear about separations and divorces. These can be avoided if we would refocus and remember our responsibility and remain where we are!

1 - Remember

Remember your focus point. Look to Christ, then spouse, children. Remember all of the sweet, polite, caring, and kind things you did and said when you first met and started dating. The way you acted when you went out for dinner or to a movie. You treated one another as if he/she was a king or a queen. You went out of your way to make sure things were as near perfect as possible. There were sweet notes, flirting and you constantly held hands.

Now that you've been married for some time, some of those things have changed or simple not done at all. You've gotten used to one another, maybe you haven't gotten used to one another and you are just existing. There is always something to distract your attention. Pressures at work, the children needing attention, financial problems, problems at church and so on. It appears that no matter where you turn, there is some sort of distraction. Where is your attention focused? Is it focused on yourself? Others? Most importantly - is your attention focused on your spouse? More important than that, is your attention focused on Jesus Christ? Remember who brought the two of you together. Your meeting one another was no accident or something that happened by chance.

God the Father saw that it was "Not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for Him" (Genesis 2:18). So we see that our marriages are in fact - Made in Heaven. We need to remember that God wants us to treat one another with the love and mercy that He has shown us personally! When the children of Israel were "slaves" to Pharaoh, they begged and pleaded for their release. Some of the pleadings that may have gone up re "Send us someone to help us. Something needs to be done." God answered their prayers by sending Moses to lead them out of captivity. God hears our prayers when we plead with him - remember those "pleadings" for a mate? God answers our prayers even when we don't take into consideration the responsibility that may come with those answered prayers!

2 - Responsibility

We have a responsibility to our mates. We're responsible or our mates' well-being, in the physical sense, emotionally. On the day you exchanged vows, whether before a magistrate or a minister, you made a promise, a vow before God to love, cherish, honor, and obey your spouse. You vowed to - Forsake All Others. This vow or covenant, next to baptism is the most important vow or covenant we can make with someone. We have a responsibility to do everything in our "physical" power to uphold this covenant. We are responsible for respecting one another by obeying the will of Christ which is to obey each other, to love each other and to help each other!

Ephesians 5:22 says, "Wives, yield to your husbands as you do to the Lord, because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. In other words, wives, respect your husbands as you respect Christ, however, do not put your husband above Christ. In some cases the wife is the only one saved in a marriage. This is not a just cause for the wife not to fulfill her duties as a wife to her husband. And vice versa - a saved husband should not put demands on his unsaved wife. No demands should be made by either spouse! In verse 25, Christ instructs husbands to love their wives as He loved the church and gave himself for it. Christ made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his fife in order to "take are" of the church! Husbands, are you willing to give up what you have for your wife? Christ did so that the church could be pure and without fault.

We should live our lives not to cause sin in someone else or to bring sin on them! Strive for righteousness in your life, in your marriage and in your families. It is so easy to get caught up in the "things of this world". The saying "Everything that glitters is not gold" is indeed true! Satan will stop at nothing to taint the purity of a marriage covenant. Satan thrives on destruction of relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children. The list goes on and on. Regardless of what Satan throws at us, we're better off in the long run if we cling to Christ and remain in our covenant with our mates. We should look to Christ as our ultimate example. Are you living up to your spouses' expectations? That doesn't matter as much as living up to the expectations of Jesus Christ. Christ instructs us to love one another. The Greek word is AGAPE which means an unconditional love. A love that is always an "outgoing concern" for another person's well-being. Not a love that has conditions or requirements! In other words, regardless of how someone treats you, show love in return. Don't have requirements or rules that say - "As long as you do ... or as long as you do not do ..., I'll love you." Love does not and should not work that way.

Live is "dealing with any and all aspects of our relationships with a caring attitude, without placing blame or fault". These last two should be addressed with one another in such a way that the issue-at-hand is resolved for the benefit of both spouses and not be a heavy burden. Remember God put you together and He does not want to see any separation! Remain as one!

3 - Remain

Remaining as a family structure is not an easy task in this present society that we live in. No matter where you go there are indications that there is a lack of a family structure. Marital strife is the number one problem in the church today as we know it. This shouldn't be! Again, where is our focus? Divorce is becoming the norm in our society and tight-knit families an oddity. With single parenthood (much of which was not the fault of the spouse with the child) constantly rising, there is only so much the mother or father is some cases, can do. Worse yet, teen pregnancy rising on a daily basis. Our children are not being taught true "family values". Values to live by on a "day in - day out" basis. With an "I got mine, you get your own" kind of attitude, things only get worse. Married couples need to develop a closer relationship with Christ! Again, where is our focus? God ordained marriage to be a blessed and holy union! Not to be gotten out of, except through death!

Present day marriage vows have the statement, "Till Death Do Us Part". We're not taking this part of our marriage covenant seriously! We need to reevaluate our commitments that we have made to our spouse. More importantly, we need to reevaluate our commitment and our focus to Christ! Rededicate yourself to your spouse. No matter what you think your "problem or situation" is. Stop trying to change things. You can't. I can't. Only God can. Re-focus your attention on Jesus Christ and He will in return make the necessary changes in your marriage and family life. Christ will then allow you to be examples of "Light" in this world of darkness. Divorce should not be an option to consider, unless there are scriptural reasons. Matthew 5:32 says, "Only for marital unfaithfulness". Marital unfaithfulness does not limit itself to adultery only!

Marital unfaithfulness can also include improper thoughts or lusts, physically and spiritually speaking. There are forms of misconduct in a marriage that could also be included such as alcoholism, physical abuse, emotional abuse or just plain neglect. If Christ is in us, there should be no reason for neglecting our spouse or our family. Sometimes we feel like we need to "get away". Well, that may be, but plan a family "get away", or a special trip for just you and your spouse. Another thing to remember, if you feel you need a "break", your spouse could very well need a break as well. Work on your own faults! Work them out with Jesus Christ! And Christ will help you to refocus your attention so that your priorities will be in the right place! Remain where you are - in love! Remember your Responsibility, and Remain where you are!

J.D. Power and LMC Automotive Report: August New-Vehicle Retail ...

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Aug.?24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The August new-vehicle selling rate is expected to be the highest monthly rate in more than four and one-half years, according to a monthly sales forecast developed by J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network? (PIN) and LMC Automotive.

Retail Light-Vehicle Sales
August new-vehicle retail sales are projected to come in at 1,066,200 units, which represents a seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of 12.3 million units. The year-over-year growth rate in retail sales continues a double-digit trend for a fourth consecutive month. Retail transactions are the most accurate measurement of true underlying consumer demand for new vehicles.

"August continues this summer's trend of healthy growth in retail sales as dealers work to?sell down inventory in time to make room for 2013 models," said John Humphrey, senior vice president of global automotive operations at J.D. Power and Associates. "To date, automakers have been diligent in better balancing production with demand, which has been critical to the improved financial performance for many brands. Going forward, this discipline will be tested as demand looks to cool somewhat through the balance of the year."

While incentives are down slightly in August, compared with July ($106 less per vehicle, on average), there are deals driving some activity as the model-year sell down takes hold. Consumers are pushing aside the economic risks, as the need to replace their current vehicle is matched by availability of both inventory and credit.

Total Light-Vehicle Sales
Total light-vehicle sales remain stable, with the volume in August expected to come in at 1,285,300 units, a 16 percent increase from August 2011. Fleet represents only 17 percent of total light-vehicle sales, which is lower than the 21 percent year-to-date average.

Sales Outlook
LMC Automotive recently revised the outlook for total light-vehicle sales in the United States downward to 14.3 million units from 14.5 million units, with retail sales at 11.4 million units, down from 11.5 million units. Weaker economic growth and concerns with the European crisis are the driving factors for slower growth during the second half of the year. The industry is still expected to achieve the 15-million-unit level in 2013, but the outlook has been tempered from a projected 15.2 million units, as the risks in 2012 spill over into next year.

"The strength in August light-vehicle sales takes some of the pressure off expectations for the balance of the year, but a high level of risk lingers," said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC Automotive. "We expect the current seesawing in auto sales to continue for the foreseeable future, but the overall picture in 2012 remains positive."

North American Production
North American light-vehicle production volume has increased by 23 percent through the first seven months this year, compared with the same period in 2011. The increase of nearly 1.7 million additional vehicles highlights the industry's recovery from the challenging production environment in 2011.

Production for Honda and Toyota in the first seven months of 2012 are up 79 percent and 65 percent, respectively, as recovery by both manufacturers takes hold. U.S. manufacturing growth is outpacing the rest of the North American region, with a 27 percent year-to-date increase as newer capacity drives the growth. Production in Mexico has increased 14 percent, with further growth expected as new key models ramp up. Canadian manufacturing has increased 20 percent year to date, but the level of future volume is at risk, as the domestic manufacturers and CAW begin labor negotiations.

Vehicle inventory in early August declined slightly to a 54-day supply, compared with 58 days in July. Car inventory remains at a below-normal level with a 47-day supply, down from 49 days in July. Truck inventory is at normal levels with a 61-day supply, down from 67 days in July.

"With the robust production activity outpacing the increases in demand, North American volume is approaching the 15.0-million-unit level for the first time since 2007," said Schuster. "However, given that inventory has normalized and growth in demand is expected to slow, LMC Automotive is holding the forecast for 2012 at 14.9 million units for the year."
