Nobel scientist Levi-Montalcini dies in Rome, 103

Rome's mayor says biologist Rita Levi-Montalcini, who conducted underground research in defiance of Fascist persecution, and went on to win a Nobel Prize for helping unlock the mysteries of the cell, has died at her home in the city. She was 103.

Italy's so-called "Lady of the Cells," who died on Sunday, lived through anti-Semitic discrimination and Nazi invasion, becoming one of her country's leading scientists and sharing the medicine prize for her groundbreaking research in the United States.

Her research increased the understanding of many conditions, including tumors, developmental malformations, and senile dementia.

Report: GM, Volkswagen face off for China sales title in 2013

Volkswagen China

Automotive News reports General Motors and Volkswagen will vie for the the sales title in China next year. Buyers in the country have been keen to snap up Audi sedans, and the cars' popularity amongst Chinese bureaucrats has helped bolster Volkswagen in the region. Next year, analysts project the German automaker will sell 2.7 million vehicles in China through 2013, thanks in part to new or revised versions of the Volkswagen Santana and Golf as well as the Skoda Octavia and Audi Q3.

Meanwhile, analysts project GM will move some 2.7 million units in China next year. The automaker plans to roll out the all-new Cadillac XTS as well as three new Opel models. Overall, China may see passenger vehicle sales jump by as much as 10 percent in 2013, pushed by a rebounding economy and better consumer confidence.

And what about Toyota? We've already heard the Japanese automaker will likely take the global sales crown next year, but analysts predict the company won't be at the top of the food chain in China. Toyota and other Japanese automakers are still suffering from consumer resentment spurred by a territorial dispute between China and Japan, and those woes will likely carry over into next year.

NFL Rumors: Washington Redskins? Kirk Cousins Game For A Trade?

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Is Washington Redskins Backup QB Kirk Cousins game for a trade if it meant he would be a starting quarterback?

If given the opportunity, he might take it.

In a recent interview with Grant Paulson, Redskins Beat Reporter for 106.7 THE FAN in DC, Cousins said, ?I view every opportunity I get as a chance to sell myself to these coaches here in D.C. and to 31 other coaches, 31 other teams.?? So, there you go: He?s advertising, and doing it well. In the Redskins? 38-21 win against the Cleveland Browns, Cousins threw for 329 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also had 17 passing first downs.

In their 28-21 win against the Baltimore Ravens, Cousins was an instrumental closer, throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to WR Pierre Garcon on a third down play in the Fourth quarter. This was followed by a two-point conversion in which he ran in himself to send the game into overtime, leading to to a 34-yard field goal from Kicker Kai Forbath for the win.? There?s no doubt the performance against a top-notch defense like the Ravens in a must-win situation, followed with orchestrating a win in Cleveland has turned some heads his way.

And what does head coach Mike Shanahan think about this? In a recent interview with the Washington Post, he said, ?It doesn?t happen very often where you?ve got a chance to have a very special player that you [draft in the fourth round]. When you?re trying to build what we are with your football team, those aren?t the type of guys you trade.?

I think if Cousins is a topic for trade it won?t be easy, because he?s someone you trade for high draft picks. That could have been the plan all along. Don?t forget: To get RG3, the Redskins traded the rights to its first-round pick (No. 6 overall), its second-round pick this year, along with first round picks in 2013 and 2014 to the St. Louis Rams for the rights to the No. 2 overall pick.

The top 10 Ohio State sports stories of 2012: Part II

This is second in two-part series by?Lantern sports editor Pat Brennan, who lists the top 10 Ohio State sports stories from 2012. Part I listed stories 10-6, which were:

10. A night to remember for Samantha Prahalis?:?Prahalis, the lone senior on the 2011-12 OSU women's basketball team, set the program's single-game scoring record with 42 points against Minnesota on Feb. 23.

9. Football recruit walks after athletic department warns of Kentucky sex offender?:?Former OSU football recruit Alex Anzalone de-committed from the Buckeyes after learning he had come into contact with a convicted sex offender during a visit to Columbus. The athletic department then cautioned all OSU student-athletes about Charles Waugh, the sex offender from Kentucky.?

8. Abandon ship: Men?s basketball?s Carrier Classic game sunk by moist court?:?OSU men's basketball's season-opening game against Marquette, scheduled to be played on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, was delayed and eventually canceled due to condensation on the outdoor playing surface.

7. Eleven Buckeyes Compete at London Olympics

6. Braxton Miller finishes 5th in Heisman Trophy voting

The top five Ohio State sports stories from 2012 are, like the previous five, telling of the athletic department's diversity. The top five tells of two athletes ? women's soccer's Tiffany Cameron and wrestling's Logan Stieber?? that set records and won championships. The top five stories also includes the successes of the two programs that drive the OSU athletics machine: Football and men's basketball. With regard to these subjects, diversity manifests itself in the fact that many OSU teams achieved on-field success in 2012.?

By the nature of the size of the OSU athletic department, it also faces widespread and diverse problems, such as the multitude of NCAA violations that were revealed in 2012. This, too, is reflected in the five listing of the most important stories produced by the OSU sports beat in 2012, and is no less important or relevant than the achievements of the athletes.?

5. Tiffany Cameron's record-breaking season

Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium won?t soon forget Tiffany Cameron?s 2012 senior season.?In her final campaign with the Scarlet and Gray, Cameron used 21 goals to shatter the previous single-season scoring record (13) and raise her career tally to 40 goals, also a program record. The Canadian international was the catalyst for OSU?s Big Ten Tournament Championship, which secured the program?s fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Cameron scored both goals in the Big Ten title game on Nov. 4 to lift OSU to a 2-1 win against Illinois. Cameron?s 69th-minute goal was one of nine game-winning strikes she recorded in 2012. She had a Big Ten-record 19 career game-winners for the Buckeyes.

4. Buckeyes bounce to Big Easy for Final Four

Between Feb. 11 and Feb. 26, the OSU men?s basketball team lost three out of five conference games. Scary stuff considering the postseason was approaching quickly, but OSU coach Thad Matta delivered what might have been his best coaching job for the program and eventually rallied his troops to a share of the regular season Big Ten title, a 31-8 overall record and a trip to the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans.

OSU?s offense, led by former forward and 2012 NBA draftee Jared Sullinger, caught fire in the NCAA Tournament as the Buckeyes danced past Loyola (Md.), Gonzaga, Cincinnati and No. 1-seeded Syracuse by a combined 48 points to capture the tournament?s East Region Championship. At the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, the wheels came off in the second half of the national semifinal game. OSU relinquished a lead, lost to Kansas, 64-62, and finally saw the curtain fall on its dream season. It was a thrilling run through the NCAA Tournament that featured one of the more talented teams Matta has assembled during his tenure in Columbus.

3. Secondary NCAA violations surface in 2012

Just more than a year after OSU football was shaken to its core by the "Tattoo-Gate" scandal that resulted in the Buckeyes being banned from postseason play in 2012, the athletic department released information about 73 secondary NCAA violations throughout 2012.

Not all the violations took place in the current calendar year ? in May, the athletic department revealed 46 secondary violations spanning across 21 of OSU?s 36 varsity programs dating back to May 30, 2011.

Less than a week later, The Lantern learned of a second round of violations during an interview with OSU athletic director Gene Smith. Smith told The Lantern of 12 additional secondary violations, which, according to a Nov. 16 Cleveland Plain Dealer report, were included with 27 violations committed between ?mid-April and mid-September.??

The 73 violations almost certainly won?t result in severe NCAA punishment, but don?t forget that the word ?violations? has become an anxiety-provoking term for some in Buckeye Nation as a result of ?Tattoo-Gate."

(AP) ? A 31-year-old woman accused of shoving a man to his death in front of a subway train because she believed he was Muslim laughed and smiled during a court hearing where she was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Erika Menendez, 31, was charged Saturday night with murder as a hate crime after she told police she spontaneously pushed Sunando Sen, according to prosecutors.

"There is no reason. I just pushed him in front of the train because I thought it would be cool," she said, according to the Queens district attorney's office.

She laughed so hard during her arraignment in Queens criminal court that Judge Gia Morris told her lawyer: "You're going to have to have your client stop laughing."

Defense attorney Dietrich Epperson said Menendez's behavior in court was no different from how she had been acting when he spoke to her privately, and said his client didn't really think the proceedings were funny. He represented her for the arraignment only and had no further comment. Menendez was held without bail and ordered to have a mental health exam.

Prosecutors said she pushed the 46-year-old India native to his death because she blamed "Muslims, Hindus and Egyptians" for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ? ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

Friends and co-workers said Sen, a native of Calcutta, was Hindu. He had lived in Queens for decades and was a graphic designer and copy shop owner. Sen was standing on an elevated platform of the 7 train that travels between Manhattan and Queens when he was shoved from behind as the train entered the station.

Witnesses told police a woman had been mumbling to herself and was sitting on a bench behind Sen until the train pulled in, then shoved him from behind. She then fled.

Police released a sketch and surveillance footage of a woman running from the subway station. Menendez was arrested after a passer-by saw her on the street and thought she looked like the wanted suspect. Witnesses identified her in a lineup and she was questioned by police, when she implicated herself, according to police and prosecutors.

Angel Luis Santiago, who used to work at the Queens building where Menendez's mother and stepfather live, said he was shocked by her arrest.

"It surprised me what she did," he said. "She never acted that way."

Menendez's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 14.

Sen was the second man to die after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train this month. Ki-Suck Han was killed in a midtown Manhattan subway station on Dec. 3. A homeless man was arrested and charged with murder in that case and is awaiting trial. He claimed he acted in self-defense.

Such subway deaths are rare, but transit officials said last week they would consider installing barriers with sliding doors on some subway platforms. Other cities including Paris and London have installed such barriers.

ATLANTA ? A 7-year-old pageant contestant from a tiny town in Middle Georgia became a worldwide celebrity, and big-name politicians froIm opposing parties united behind a transportation tax that fell flat with voters. From politics to pop culture, Georgia's top news stories in 2012 offered something for everyone.

The reality show "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" was a ratings winner in 2012. The show capitalized on Southern stereotypes and the oversized personality of Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, a beauty pageant regular; her mother, June Shannon; and their rural Georgia family. Some critics said the show mocked small-town life while others insisted the series showed a loving family who didn't let outside opinions bother them. The show was a breakout hit for TLC, and residents of McIntyre told The Associated Press in September that it put their town on the map.

The story of a metro Atlanta woman fighting for her life after contracting a rare, flesh-eating disease was one of the most inspirational.

Necrotizing fasciitis took the limbs of 24-year-old Aimee Copeland -- and nearly took her life -- but it didn't take her spirit. Much of Georgia and the nation rallied behind Copeland, a University of West Georgia student from Snellville, who contracted the infection when she suffered a deep gash to one of her legs during a zip lining accident. Her hands, left leg and right foot were amputated at a hospital in Augusta, and she spent two months in a rehabilitation center in Atlanta learning to move and care for herself again. Once the surgeries were over and she received prosthetic limbs to replace the ones she lost, Copeland appeared on Katie Couric's television show and said her infection and inspirational recovery left her with a new appreciation for life.

Baseball fans this year came to terms with the retirement of a seven-time All-Star player who spent his entire major league career with the Atlanta Braves.

After 19 years and three trips to the World Series, third baseman Chipper Jones announced plans in March to retire at the end of the season. Jones, 40, was part of the 1995 team that beat the Cleveland Indians in the World Series.

His career ended in early October during a one-game wild card playoff against the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite the Braves facing elimination from the postseason, fans gave Jones a standing ovation as he waved his helmet before his last at-bat in the ninth inning.

In the world of politics, a failed tax referendum showed that bipartisan backing doesn't always translate to support from constituents.

Voters in July rejected a penny sales tax to pay for transportation projects in nine of 12 regions in Georgia, including in metro Atlanta. The referendum was years in the making at the legislative level, and many lawmakers touted the choice as one of local control for communities.

Supporters of the measure included Republican Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, a Democrat, who appealed to voters in the run-up to the election. They tied the tax to Georgia's economic future and promised the infrastructure projects would ease traffic congestion for frustrated commuters. An unlikely coalition -- including tea party members, the state NAACP and the Sierra Club -- blasted the plan as not only the heftiest tax proposal in state history, but as a false strategy that failed to encourage smart growth.

Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel may have turned a national controversy into a political opportunity after resigning as vice president for public policy at Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Handel found herself in a media firestorm when the organization stripped funding for Planned Parenthood. Handel resigned in February, saying the issue was consumed by politics.

In "Planned Bullyhood," a book she released in September, Handel portrayed Planned Parenthood as an aggressive, partisan organization that was willing to weaken Komen to further a liberal political agenda. The controversy could be a political boon for Handel, who is said to be considering challenging fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss in 2014. The Planned Parenthood flap may have helped bolster her conservative credentials if she does decide to run for office.

Some of the issues at the heart of Georgia's top news stories this year were left unresolved. The cliffhangers from 2012 promise to make 2013 interesting.

The monthlong trial of Hemy Neuman that ended with his conviction in March in the slaying of Russell Sneiderman attracted national attention. Sneiderman's wife, Andrea, worked for Neuman. Lawyers on both sides suggested an affair between the two, and said she manipulated Neuman into killing her husband outside a day care in suburban Atlanta.

Sneiderman was arrested in August and spent several weeks in jail until she was released on bond. Sneiderman is under house arrest until her trial, which is expected to happen next year.

Michael Adams, president of the University of Georgia, announced his retirement in May, and said he would continue as a faculty member with the university after June 2013. Adams will have served as university president for 16 years. Among other things, the university's enrollment grew to 35,000 students, the endowment nearly tripled and medical and engineering programs took shape under his watch.

A 21-person search committee is currently looking for candidates to replace Adams, but many say his tenure in Athens will be a tough act to follow.

Executions in Georgia were effectively put on hold when the state Supreme Court in July stayed the execution of Warren Lee Hill, who was sentenced to death in the 1990 killing of a fellow inmate while serving a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend. The high court gave itself time to review a challenge filed by Hill's defense lawyers, who said state corrections officials didn't follow the proper administrative procedure in switching its execution protocol from a three-drug combination to a single-drug injection.

Hill's lawyers said the change was not preceded by a 30-day notice period as required by the Georgia Administrative Procedure Act. The state argued the lethal injection protocol is part of the Department of Corrections' standing operating procedures, which can be changed by the department's commissioner without additional steps.

The Supreme Court heard arguments from both sides in November, but hasn't issued a ruling in the case.

Several notable Georgians died in 2012.

Furman Bisher, 93, was a longtime Atlanta Journal-Constitution sports columnist. Otis Brumby, 72, was publisher the Marietta Daily Journal. Besse Cooper, 116, of Monroe, was listed as the oldest person in the world. Leila Denmark, 114, was the world's oldest practicing physician when she retired at the age of 103. Conrad Fink, 80, was a revered journalism professor in the University of Georgia. Jesse Hill Jr., 86, was a civil rights activist and Atlanta businessman. Dick Pettys, 66, was a longtime AP politics reporter. Joe South, 72, was a Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter.

Happiness and Weight Loss ? 180 Degree Health

By Julia Gumm

I was in a wedding once. The bride was a pushy sort, not exactly a ?bridezilla?, but she wanted all the details of her special day to be in order as soon as possible. Among other things, that meant that I had to be fitted for my bridesmaid?s dress about a year before the ceremony. Now, I?m not one of those people who walks the earth taking up the same precise amount of space from season to season, year to year, know what I mean? The bride, knowing this as well as I did, hissed at me between gritted teeth ?Now don?t you go losing a bunch of weight or something!?

Well, when the anticipated date arrived, I found that there was a lot more dress to my dress than I had realized. Actually, there was just less of me inside of the dress. Suffice it to say, the bride was exasperated. ?WHY did you lose weight?!? She wanted to know, as if I had gone and done it on purpose to screw up the optics of her wedding. ?Uh, I don?t know? I stammered, ?I didn?t try to?? which was true. I hadn?t! And I had done something else not really on purpose either?it had just kind of happened with each inspiring and exciting experience I embraced building on the last: I got really happy.

Can happiness cause weight loss? I think so. It happened to me. If chronic stress causes weight gain, can?t the reverse be true?

The year that I was quietly dropping dress sizes was spent working full time in a little cafe which specialized in an orgasmic array of homemade desserts?none of which escaped my fork. White chocolate mousse pie, Key Lime pie, bread pudding, chocolate layer cake, homemade ice cream, hot fudge, real whipped cream. I ate it all in excess. We also served sandwiches, and I always ordered mine on a buttery croissant, with extra cheese, please. It was a veritable nightmare to behold for health minded folks everywhere, but I was getting slimmer and more energetic every day. I was pretty surprised by my shrinking waistline, as I was coming out of an adolescence marked by eating disorders and a dubious flirtation with various unsavory and addictive substances. This was the first time in many years that I was sober and eating at will. After an initial period of weight gain, the excess began to melt away as I became happier, healthier and more of a satisfied, confident person.

I adored working at that cafe. I understand that the place waitresses occupy in the hierarchy of societal functions isn?t supposed to be much to get excited over, but I really, truly loved that job. I had a boss who treated me like a valued human being rather than an unfortunate cost of doing business, as so many employers do. This allowed me to put my all into my job instead of withholding my best work out of resent for being unappreciated and unacknowledged, as is so often the case in the workplace.

I believed in the value of what I was doing. If you?re gonna eat, you oughta eat good, and good food was what I was serving up. I believe, with all my soul that people should indulge in wholesome simple pleasures like hot fudge sundaes.? I relished every opportunity to talk unhappy women who were wistfully eyeing the dessert case into just going for it and forgetting about ?being good.??Good for what? They looked pretty miserable to me. What I was selling was self-acceptance and the freedom to let yourself go. I was selling it to my customers and I was selling it to myself, too.? And I got paid to do it! Not very much of course, but who cares? I didn?t. It was enough, and I was thoroughly enjoying myself.

I was thinking past my perceived limitations. After a lackluster showing in high school, I decided to push myself and sign up for a college philosophy class. Previously, I was a straight D student with the attention span of a gnat. In this class, I scored an A. Man, did that feel good. It made me think bigger.

I wanted to explore. I asked a co-worker to drive cross-country with me. We took everyone?s unwanted shifts and worked overtime for months, socking away our earnings to blow on the road. I would work endless hours, double shift, round the clock, but I never tired. We?d blare obnoxiously loud music and dance like idiots while sweeping and mopping after we closed. It was an unusually cold winter that year and I swear, I never wore a coat. I was warm all the time and I never got sick. I ate a heaps of beautiful, calorie rich foods, but I also moved more. Not out of desire to lose weight or whip myself into shape, but out of inspired, energetic spontaneity.

The only thing I did to be ?health conscious? was take a daily calcium magnesium zinc supplement. Everything else was on auto-pilot for the first time in a long time, including how much cake I ate (a lot) and how much time I spent worrying about getting thinner (a little). I didn?t embrace a new religion. I didn?t find a new dietary dogma to subscribe to. I didn?t do any goddamned yoga. I simply unmoored myself from beliefs, feelings and disciplines that were holding me back. I let myself go, and lo, I went. In the process, I dropped 4 dress sizes. How ?bout that?? It was oh-so Linda Bacon?

?I am no longer waiting to lose weight before I live my life fully.? Having freed up all the energy and time that I spent on dieting or obsessing about my weight or food and having let go of my shame about these, I have greater depth and fulfillment in my life, including deeper intimacy with others.? I don?t think about my weight, and it stays fairly consistent.? Oddly, after this new eating pattern became firmly rooted, I actually lost about thirty pounds.??

So that?s how I became ecstatically happy and lost a bunch of weight. I got a low wage job at a sweet cafe, ate a bunch of cake, took a class and worked my ass off to pay for a road trip taken for no other reason than the hell of it. Pretty easy stuff. Now hold on, don?t rush out and get a crappy food service job. This isn?t the panacea, the universal key I stumbled upon that unlocks the secrets of contentedness. Waitressing for peanuts isn?t going to satisfy everyone- hell, it wouldn?t satisfy me at this point.

But it was what I needed, then. People need to identify what they need where they are at and go for it. One size doesn?t fit all, and you yourself will often need different things at different times. I desperately needed to reestablish a healthy relationship with food, and through eating to appetite (and beyond) the appealing, calorie dense foods that surrounded me, I did just that. I was able to repair an overwhelming backlog of psychological and metabolic damage I had incurred through years of over exercise and calorie restriction. Truthfully, it would have done me a lot of good to get my formerly?chilly?hands on 180D, because what Matt?s talking about is precisely what I needed then, and have needed at other points in my life when I?ve been stressed, depressed, cold, sad, sick, fat- all that fun stuff. I?ve been lucky enough to eventually intuit what my body needed and run with it, but it?s not always so easy to tune out the noise of conventional wisdom on your own.

Beyond my daily dose of dessert, I was just having fun with life. I had goals that I was meeting, was forming lasting friendships, performing a function I was good at and felt good about?simple stuff. Simple stuff, but so often elusive. Study after study shows the health benefits from being happy and that happiness is tied up in having basic needs met, feeling a part of something larger and more meaningful than oneself,? and somewhat surprisingly, cooperation and altruism. It?s no surprise then that our culture of self-promotion, over-work, consumption and forever keeping up with those damned Joneses can leave us feeling less than satisfied. When I was 19 years old, I experienced a moment in my life where I freely shed narrow beliefs about who I should be like, what I should look like and how good I could ever be. I embraced what was around me, ate what was around me, and chased my dreams, however humble they were. I worked in a cooperative environment. I was kinder, more creative, more confident, and by all counts, very very happy. And svelte to boot! Yep, that bridesmaid?s dress was positively swimming on me. Not that I cared. As delighted as I was to wear the thing for the wedding, I had no designs on EVER wearing it again. I mean really, periwinkle? C?mon.

(AP) ? The phones at Red's Trading Post wouldn't stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped.

Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days.

"We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red's Trading Post, the state's oldest gun shop, since 1936. "We were swamped in the store and online."

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators. The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control measures, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. The prospect of a possible weapons ban has sent gun enthusiasts into a panic and sparked a frenzy of buying at stores and gun dealers nationwide.

Assault rifles are sold out across the country. Rounds of .223 bullets, like those used in the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifle used in Newtown, are scarce. Stores are struggling to restock their shelves. Gun and ammunition makers are telling retailers they will have to wait months to get more.

Store owners who have been in the business for years say they have never seen demand like this before.

When asked how much sales have increased in the past few weeks, Horsley just laughed.

"We haven't even had a chance to look at it," he says. Horsley spends his days calling manufacturers around the country trying to buy more items for the store. Mainly, they tell him he has to wait.

Franklin Armory, a firearm maker in Morgan Hill, Calif., is telling dealers that it will take six months to fulfill their orders. The company plans to hire more workers and buy more machines to catch up, says Franklin Armory's President Jay Jacobson.

The shortage is leaving many would-be gun owners empty handed.

William Kotis went to a gun show in Winston-Salem, N.C., last weekend hoping to buy a rifle for target shooting. Almost everything was sold out.

"Assault rifles were selling like crazy," says Kotis, who is president and CEO of Kotis Holdings, a real estate development company based in Greensboro. "People are stockpiling."

He left without buying anything.

Luke Orlando's parents were able to get him the 12-gauge shotgun he wanted for Christmas to bird hunt, but his uncle wasn't as lucky.

"At Christmas dinner, my uncle expressed outrage that after waiting six months to use his Christmas bonus to purchase an AR-15, they are sold out and back ordered over a year," says Orlando, 18, a student at the University of Texas.

No organization publicly releases gun sales data. The only way to measure demand is by the number of background checks that are conducted when someone wants to buy a firearm. Those numbers are released by the Federal Reserve Bureau every month. Data for December is not out yet. But the Federal Bureau of Investigation says that it did 16.8 million firearm background checks as of the end of November, up more than 2 percent from a year ago.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which handles background checks for the state, can't keep up with the number of requests it is getting. The bureau has pulled staff from other units and increased its hours, says spokesperson Susan Medina.

Many firearm dealers and manufacturers say that Obama's comments since the Newtown school shooting are driving demand.

James Zimmerman of SelwayArmory.com, a website that sells guns, ammunition and knives, says that sales really took off on Dec. 19 after President Barack Obama held a White House press conference announcing that Vice President Joe Biden would lead a team tasked with coming up with "concrete proposals" to curb gun violence.

That day, one customer ordered 32,000 rounds of ammunition from SelwayArmory.com, worth close to $18,000. The order had to be shipped from the company's Lolo, Mont., office to Kentucky on a freight truck.

"I've done more sales in the week after the 19th than I have the whole year," says Zimmerman, who launched SelwayArmory.com in 2009.

At Lady Liberty Gunsmithing LLC in Atlantic City, N.J., a customer called last week asking if a pistol he wanted was available. When he was told there was only one left, he drove more than two hours from Newark, N.J., to buy it that same day.

"People want guns now even more than ever," says Guy Petinga II, whose father opened the store above his home in 1996.

Others saw demand immediately after the shooting.

Bullet Blocker, which makes bulletproof vests, briefcases and insert panels, saw sales of its children's backpacks suddenly jump.

"That's how I found out about the tragedy. I saw the sales rise and then turned on CNN," says Elmar Uy, vice president of business operations at the Billerica, Mass., company.

Bullet Blocker has sold about 50 to 100 bulletproof backpacks a day since the shooting, up from about 10 to 15 in a regular week. The children's backpacks, which are designed to be used as shields, cost over $200 each.

"I've never seen numbers like this before," says Uy.

Here's another 'fiscal cliff' worry: tax-filing delays

With some investments already feeling the pain of the looming cliff, millions of Americans are at risk of being affected. The first to consider is the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts, according to CNBC's Jackie Deangelis.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

If you?re the type of person who likes to file your income tax return as soon as possible, then you?ve got another reason to be frustrated by the fiscal cliff stalemate in Washington, D.C.

Most of the tax changes being discussed as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations would go into effect in 2013, meaning that taxpayers would first have to account for them when they went to file those tax returns in early 2014.

But a handful of the provisions under discussion could affect Americans? 2012 taxes. The down-to-the-wire negotiations in the nation's capital could leave the IRS scrambling to adopt the changes in its systems, delaying the agency?s ability to accept some people?s returns.

?Congress oftentimes waits until the last minute to pass legislation, and then that in a turn affects the IRS,? said Bob Meighan, vice president with tax software provider TurboTax.

That's definitely been the case this time around. Just a few days before the end of the year, Congress has not been able to come to an agreement over a series of tax increases that are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1. President Barack Obama said Friday that he was "modestly optimistic" a deal could still be reached to avert going over the so-called fiscal cliff.?

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven T. Miller has already warned that there could be serious filing delays if Congress doesn?t provide a patch for the Alternative Minimum Tax. An IRS spokesman said Friday that the agency did not have any further information beyond the warnings Miller gave to lawmakers in a letter earlier this month.

The AMT is a provision in the tax code that was designed to ensure that wealthy taxpayers have to?pay at least a minimum amount of taxes. It was never indexed for inflation, however, so Congress has had to provide temporary fixes over the years to ensure that lower-income taxpayers aren?t affected.

That hasn?t happened yet this year because of the fiscal cliff stalemate. In the letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp earlier this month, Miller, the acting IRS commissioner, warned that if Congress doesn?t provide a patch this year, then the IRS would have to make significant programming changes to account for that.

?In that event, given the magnitude and complexity of the changes needed, I want to reiterate that most taxpayers may not be able to file their 2012 tax returns until late in March of 2013, or even later,? Miller wrote in the Dec. 19 letter.

Miller also warned that as many as 30 million additional taxpayers could be subject to the AMT if a patch isn?t put in place.

For now, Miller said the IRS is acting as if Congress will provide an AMT patch.

Meighan, of TurboTax, said his company also has prepared its software as if a patch will be in place. But he said the company also is ready to?switch gears quickly if it must.

Meighan said a few other provisions under discussion as part of the fiscal cliff negotiation could affect a minority of taxpayers in 2012. Those include a deduction teachers get for school supplies they purchase for their classrooms and a tuition and fees deduction that applies to some students.

"It's really gotten to a point now where you have the ideological divisions in the country overlapped now with the partisan divisions," said CNBC's Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood.

The IRS has had to ask people to delay filing their returns before. In 2010, Congress passed last-minute tax law changes on Dec. 17. As a result, the IRS said it wouldn?t be able to accept returns with itemized deductions until February of 2011 because it needed time to adjust its systems.

If people are forced to wait to file their tax returns, that would also mean a delay in getting tax refunds. Roberton Williams, a senior fellow with the Tax Policy Center, said that in turn could have some effect on the economy because many people count on that money to pay off debt or buy big-ticket items.

If the AMT isn?t patched at all, he noted, that would be an even bigger economic hit because some taxpayers wouldn?t get their expected refund at all.

?That will have a major effect on the economy,? Williams said. ?It will be pulling a lot of money out of the economy that people are expecting.?

Despite the Congressional deadlock, experts say they are still assuming a deal will be made to put the patch in place.

?For most people, come 2013 they?ll be able to file their taxes, they?ll get their refund and life goes on,? Meighan said.

When do you usually file your taxes?
