Following Serena Williams's victory over Russia's Maria Sharapova in straight sets, both women were joined by bronze medallist Victoria Azarenka for a victory ceremony on the club's Centre Court.
As the US anthem was played and the three flags were hoisted high into the stadium, the wind picked up and a gust unhooked the Stars and Stripes from i's mount. Spectators and medallists gasped and looked at officials for guidance as the flag then fell to the ground.
"I just saw all these gusts of wind. Then I saw the flag flying," Williams told USA Today after the presentation.
"It was probably flying to come hug me because [it] was so happy," she joked. "It didn't quite make it but almost. It was fluttering towards me trying to wrap its fabric around me.
"It was so windy I was surprised they didn't all fall off," she added.
