NEW YORK ? Corporations are people. The fundamentals of the economy are strong. I voted for the $87 billion before I voted against it.
From Mitt Romney this month to John McCain in 2008 and John Kerry four years earlier, presidential candidates are caught telling the truth by accident in every campaign, blurting a phrase that is both factual but politically ill-advised.
Those moments speak to the deeply contradictory nature of American politics.
Voters say they want authentic, straight-talking candidates. But voters also tend to punish candidates who veer too far off script or who make assertions that, while true, cause people to cringe and question whether these politicians are out of touch with those they seek to represent.
Consider Romney, the early GOP front-runner who recently confronted a heckler in Iowa who was demanding higher taxes on corporations.
"Corporations are people, my friend," the former Massachusetts governor shot back. "Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."
Romney said it again at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Wednesday.
"When you say tax corporations, steel, vinyl, concrete, they don't pay taxes. Only people do," he said.
Corporations are made up of the people who work for them and stockholders who benefit from their profits. The Supreme Court said as much last year when it eased restrictions on campaign spending by corporations, saying businesses deserve the same freedom of speech individuals enjoy.
But it was smart for Romney to say, given the nation's high unemployment and deep resentment of Wall Street? Probably not.
Democrats, predictably, pounced. President Barack Obama said he disagreed with the notion that corporate tax breaks are "good for ordinary Americans."
It's possible that Romney's comment won't damage his campaign because Republican primary voters tend to view business interests more favorably than do Democrats. But because of his wealth and history at Bain Capital, a private equity firm that created jobs in some places but made them disappear elsewhere through consolidation, the remark could reinforce the perception that Romney is disconnected from the concerns of working people.
"The gaffes that get traction tend to be the ones that fit a narrative that already exists about the candidate," said Marc Hetherington, a political science professor at Vanderbilt University who studies campaign rhetoric. "Since corporations are very unpopular right now, it could really stick to someone like Romney who is so identified with the business community."
Massachusetts Sen. Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee, learned a hard lesson about reinforcing an existing story line. He opposed money the war in Iraq and voted against the legislation when it came up for final consideration. But he had gone along with an earlier version.
At one point, he told supporters: "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it." He was trying to explain that he wanted to ensure troops had the necessary equipment, but at the same time hoped to convey a message of opposition to the war.
The result was the Republicans cast Kerry as a flip-flopper in contrast with President George W. Bush's image of strength and resolve. Bush narrowly won re-election that year.
In the fall of 2007, Hillary Rodham Clinton found herself in an uncomfortable spot just as Obama was gaining traction in the Democratic primary in part by railing against special interests.
Before a liberal audience and with Obama on stage nearby, Clinton launched a spirited defense of lobbyists ? inadvertently burnishing her reputation as a protector of the status quo in Washington.
"A lot of these lobbyists, whether you like it or not, represent real Americans," she said. "They represent nurses, they represent social workers, they represent corporations that employ a lot of people."
It was true, but ill-timed and problematic, particularly in front of a progressive audience that already doubted Clinton's commitment to liberal issues.
McCain, the Republican presidential nominee in 2008, faced a similar situation that September after the collapse of the Lehman Brothers investment bank and at the outset of the global finance meltdown.
"The fundamentals of the economy are strong," McCain said. He was trying to reassure a jittery nation that its workers, whom he called the backbone of the economy, were resilient and productive. Few probably would disagree with that explanation, but as the stock market tanked his sound bite sounded jarringly off base.
It was a searing misstatement for the Arizona senator who had never seemed comfortable discussing the economy.
Charlie Black, a top adviser to the McCain campaign at the time, attributes McCain's loss more to the financial crisis than that comment. Black also doubted Romney would suffer from his comment, given his campaign performance thus far.
"Romney has been out there quite a while in a low key way," Black said. "If that's the first mistake he's made so far, it's a pretty good batting average."
Another GOP contender in 2012, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, has had his own moments of inadvertent truth-telling. He's been asked to defend comments from his book, "Fed Up," in which he called Social Security a "Ponzi scheme."
The Social Security system does pay benefits to retirees from what it collects from current workers, much as a Ponzi scheme draws on payments from new investors to shell out returns to existing ones. There is a chance that if left unchanged, Social Security will not collect enough benefits to fund the swelling number of future retirees.
But a Ponzi scheme is a deliberate fraud.

US brushes off Syrian complaint over envoy trip (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is brushing off a complaint by Syrian authorities that the U.S. ambassador violated their travel rules by leaving the capital this week without permission.
The State Department says the Syrian foreign ministry registered concern over Robert Ford's trip Tuesday from Damascus to the village of Jassem, where he met opposition activists.
The U.S. says the Syrians have denied previous travel requests and complained when Ford made this trip without asking.
The State Department said Wednesday it was not clear whether Syria would take action against him. Ford could be expelled or face further travel restrictions.
The U.S. has maintained diplomatic relations with Syria despite protesting President Bashar Assad's efforts to crush the 5-month-old uprising against him. The Obama administration said last week that Assad should step down.

New factor in HIV infection uncovered
ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2011) ? A George Mason University researcher team has revealed the specific process by which the HIV virus infects healthy T cells -- a process previously unknown. The principal investigator, HIV researcher Yuntao Wu, says he hopes this breakthrough will start a new line on inquiry into how researchers can use this knowledge to create drugs that could limit or halt HIV infection.
Wu, a professor of molecular and microbiology at Mason, published these findings in an April 2011 edition of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, along with researchers Paul J. Vorster, Jia Guo, Alyson Yoder, Weifeng Wang, Yanfang Zheng, Dongyang Yu and Mark Spear from Mason's National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases and the Department of Molecular and Microbiology and Xuehua Xu from Georgetown University School of Medicine's Department of Oncology.
This paper outlined a new understanding on how T cells -- which are the target cells that the HIV virus infects -- move and migrate when hijacked by the virus.
"The discovery adds to our understanding of how HIV initiates the infection of human T cells, which leads to their eventual destruction and the development of AIDS," Wu says.
Researchers and doctors have known for some time that the HIV virus, rather than directly killing healthy T cells, actually hijacks them. This eventually leads to their destruction. So the virus essentially turns the infected T cells (also known as CD4T cells or helper T cells) into a factory for creating even more HIV. Learning more about how the cells are infected could be a key step toward figuring out how to stop infection altogether.
Wu's latest discovery builds upon his previous work, published in the journal Cell in 2008, which described the basic process of how HIV infects T cells. After discovering that cofilin -- a protein used to cut through a cell's outer layer, or cytoskeleton -- is involved in HIV infection, Wu's new research provides the detailed framework for this process.
This new factor is called LIM domain kinase, or LIMK. The researchers discovered that LIMK triggers a cell to move, almost acting like a propeller. This cell movement is essential for HIV infection. This discovery marks the first time that a research team has uncovered the involvement of LIMK in HIV infection.
Building upon these results, the researchers then used a drug to trigger similar LIMK activation and found that it increased infection of T cells. Of course, the researchers ultimately want to decrease the infection of T cells -- so they worked backwards and found something very promising.
"When we engineered the cell to inhibit LIMK activity, the cell became relatively resistant to HIV infection," says Wu. In other words, the researchers engineered human T cells that were not easily infected by HIV. This finding suggests that, in the future, drugs could be developed based on LIMK inhibition.
And while there are currently no medical drugs available to inhibit LIMK, Wu hopes this is a developing area in potential new therapeutic targets. One advantage of using this kind of therapy over the current medication available to those with HIV is that it's more difficult for the HIV virus to generate resistance to treatment, Wu explains.
Wu's team continues its work on decoding this complicated process, and he stresses that there is still much to be done.
"These findings are certainly exciting, and are an emerging research field that we are proud to have established three years ago with the publication of our Cell paper," he says. "We will continue to study the molecular details and to use those discoveries to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to monitor and treat HIV-mediated CD4 T cell dysfunction and depletion."

As the summer draws to an end, parents and students are beginning to prepare for the start of the school year.? For many parents, sending their children off to school can be both a joyous and fearful occasion.? The worry experienced by parents is fueled, in part, by news headlines of teachers having inappropriate sexual relationships with their students.? In order to address these concerns, the Missouri Legislature recently signed into law the Amy Hestir Student Protection Act.? This so-called ?Facebook Law,? which was named after a student who was sexually abused by her junior high school teacher, regulates communications between teachers and students on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.? State Senator Jane Cunningham, who sponsored the bill, said the purpose of the law is to discourage teachers and students from engaging in exclusive communications with each other through social networking platforms because such contact with each other ?is a pathway into sexual misconduct.?
The new law requires school districts to develop a written policy concerning teacher-student and employee-student communications that include guidelines on the appropriate use of electronic media including text messaging and social networking sites.? In addition, the new law prohibits teachers from establishing, maintaining, or using a work-related website unless it is available to school administrators and the child's parents or legal guardian. Finally, the law prohibits teachers from establishing, maintaining, or using a nonwork-related website that allows exclusive access with a current or former student.?
Passage of the ?Facebook Law,? which is believed to be the first of its kind in the country, drew immediate criticism.? Opponents argue that the law will cause teachers to communicate less with their students resulting in weaker teacher-student relationships.? Opponents also argue that the law chills free speech.? However, those in favor of the law insist that it does not restrict speech between educators and students.? It remains to be seen how long Missouri?s ?Facebook Law? will remain in effect and whether it will prompt other states such as California to adopt similar legislation.? Opponents of the law have already started a campaign to repeal the law.? The law may also be subject to court challenges on constitutional grounds.
Regardless of whether the ?Facebook Law? survives, the reality is that teachers and students are increasingly using social networking sites as a vehicle to communicate with each other.? Consequently, school districts should adopt policies and guidelines regarding the appropriate use of social media platforms.? This may include deciding whether to allow teachers and students to communicate through social media at all, or to prohibit it altogether.? If the district allows such contact, then guidelines should remind teachers and school staff to consider the content on their social media sites including their profile, pictures, and postings on their wall.?
