Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the age of 56. The Apple CEO is credited as the mastermind behind products such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes.
His death follows his August 24, 2011 departure as CEO of the company after a battle with pancreatic cancer interfered with Jobs' ability to adequately fulfill his duties. In 2004 he publicly announced his rare form of Pancreatic cancer and, in August 2011, Jobs stepped down as CEO on.
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," he said during the announcement.
Now, just over a month later, the CEO has passed away.
The Apple website showcases a photograph of Jobs with "1955 - 2011" underneath his name. It reads:
" Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
Though Jobs kept to himself and preferred to stay out of the media spotlight, his contributions to the world as a master innovator made him one of the most recognized and respected CEOs in the world.
According to a report by ABC News, Jobs was a prodigy who dropped out of Reed College in Oregon at the age of 21. He started Apple with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in his parents' garage and, by the age of 25, became a multimillionaire. Jobs appeared on the cover of Time magazine at the age of 26 and, in 1984, was ousted at Apple at only 30 years old.
Jobs was scrupulous when it came to his products and rejected multiple versions of new products until he felt the product was just right. He also valued aesthetics just as much as he did the actual hardware and software of each Apple product.
A statement released by Apple's board of directors reads: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."
