Hoop dreams tempted A&M receiver Mike Evans to sign with ...

IRVING ? Texas A&M redshirt freshman receiver Mike Evans gave up football for two years in high school to focus on basketball before resuming his football career his senior season. Good call.

Evans, 6-5, 218, leads the Aggies with 75 catches and 1,022 yards. He has five touchdowns entering Friday?s AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.

Basketball continues to be a passion. He sometimes plays at the recreation center with quarterback Johnny Manziel.

?Me and him,? Evans said, ?we?re like LeBron and Dwyane Wade.?

Evans, out of Galveston Ball, said that after he committed to A&M in football, he received an offer to play basketball at Texas.

?It was tough; I loved basketball,? he said. ?I stuck to Texas A&M.?

Coach Kevin Sumlin said this week that Evans has overcome being banged-up most of the season. For the last half of the season, he practiced only on Thursdays to save his body.

Evans said he?s eager to continue improving ? ticking off his goals of running crisper routes, getting faster and becoming more durable.

Despite Evans? breakout season, he spoke to the media for the first time only this week because of Sumlin?s restrictions on interviewing freshmen. Of course, the players have personal stories that are only starting to be revealed.

Evans, who is actually Mike Evans III, lost his father when he was in the fourth grade. Evans said Mike Evans Jr. was murdered, but declined to elaborate.

He has a tattoo on his right arm in memory of his father.
