and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services? said the Walnut Creek-based health system?s 197-doctor John Muir Physician Network has been approved as one of six new Medicare ACOs in California and 89 nationally.The new accountable care organizations, being piloted by various hospitals and medical groups nationwide, are intended to provide better coordination and care to fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries, according to CMS.
The feds said July 9 that 89 new ACOs began serving 1.2 million new Medicare beneficiaries as of July 1, including six in California: John Muir?s network, Sacramento?s Golden Life Healthcare LLC, Hawthorne?s Meridian Holdings Inc., Glendale?s ApolloMed ACO, Oceanside?s North Coast Medical ACO Inc., and Torrance Memorial Integrated Physicians.
Overall, 154 Medicare ACOs are caring for 2.4 million beneficiaries, said acting CMS administrator Marilyn Tavenner.
A number of non-Medicare accountable care organizations have also sprouted, including efforts in San Francisco and Sacramento linking Hill Physicians Medical Group doctors, Blue Shield of California?
