Doctors say shot Pakistani girl improving

LONDON (AP) ? The British hospital treating a 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban raised hopes for her recovery Friday when doctors said she was able to stand with some help and to write.

Malala Yousufzai appeared with her eyes open and alert as she lay in a hospital bed, in the first photographs released by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham since she arrived from Pakistan on Monday.

It was a series of positive developments since the shooting, which was a brazen bid by the Taliban to silence the girl, who has been an outspoken advocate for girls' right to education.

Still, doctors said she shows signs of infection and faces a long, difficult recovery with uncertain prospects.

"She is not out of the woods yet," hospital medical director Dr. Dave Rosser said. "Having said that, she's doing very well. In fact, she was standing with some help for the first time this morning when I went in to see her."

He said Malala had agreed to the release of medical information and photos, and wants to thank people throughout the world for their interest and support in the difficult days since she was gunned down in Pakistan.

He said her bullet wound has become infected.

A large bruise beneath her left eye could be seen in the photo released Friday, showing Malala in her hospital bed with a toy bear. The upbeat report galvanized Malala's many backers, who had feared the worst.

Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, daughter of the late Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, described Malala's progress as wondrous.

"Miracles of today: Malala able to stand," she tweeted.

Canadian writer and journalist Irshad Manji celebrated the girl's progress on Twitter: "So listen up world; Miracle Malala has more 2 say."

Brain injury experts stressed, however, that she is at the start of what will be a long process.

Dr. Jaime Levine, medical director of brain injury rehabilitation at New York University's Rusk Rehabilitation unit in Manhattan, said Malala's ability to stand with assistance and move her arms was a "wonderful sign," but the doctor said it was too soon to say whether she would make a complete recovery.

"For some, recovery from a brain injury is a lifelong process," Levine said. "Some people are left with limitations for the rest of their lives. We speak about recovery in terms of goals and function. For a 15-year-old girl attending school with the promise of her whole life in front of her, goals for her are to finish school and to have a job one day and to have a family. ... But we're not talking about those goals yet. We're talking about short-term goals."

Malala has come to be a symbol for a girl's right to education.

At the age of 11, she began writing a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC about life under the Taliban in the Swat Valley. After the military ousted the militants in 2009, she began publicly speaking out about the need for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest civilian honors for her bravery.

Malala was shot and critically wounded on Oct. 9 as she headed home from school in the northwest Swat Valley. The Taliban said they targeted Malala, a fierce advocate for girls' education, because she promoted "Western thinking" and was critical of the militant group.

The Taliban attack was widely condemned.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the shooting as a "heinous and cowardly act," and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the "attack reminds us of the challenges that girls face, whether it is poverty or marginalization or even violence just for speaking out for their basic rights."

Malala was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham on Monday for advanced medical treatment and for security protection. She was in a medically induced coma when she arrived, and regained consciousness on Tuesday, the hospital said.

The medical briefing Friday offered the first real indication of her progress. Earlier briefings were quite limited out of respect for the girl's privacy.

She is in Britain alone. Hospital officials have been in touch with her family in Pakistan.

Rosser said the girl "is communicating very freely, she is writing" but not speaking because she has a tracheotomy tube in her throat.

"We have no reason to believe that she would not be able to talk once this tube is out, which it may be in the next few days," Rosser said.

Scans have revealed some physical damage to her brain, but "at this stage we're not seeing any deficit in terms of function," Rosser said.

"She seems able to understand. She's got motor control, she's able to write.

"Whether there's any subtle intellectual or memory deficits down the line is too early to say," he added.

"It is possible she will make a smooth recovery, but it is impossible to tell I'm afraid."

Malala needs time to recover her strength before surgery to reconstruct her skull, either with her own bone or a titanium plate, the hospital said in a briefing note. That could be weeks or months in the future.

The bullet, which was removed by surgeons in Pakistan, hit Malala's left brow. It traveled beneath the skin and into the neck, damaging soft tissue at the base of the jaw and base of the neck, the note said.

"There is every sign that she understands why she's here," Rosser said.

"It's a very difficult position for her, clearly, because she has gone from being on a school bus and the next thing she will be consciously aware of is being in a strange hospital in a different country."

Officials in the Swat Valley originally said Malala?was 14 years old but officials at her school confirmed that her birthday was July 12, 1997, making her 15, as the U.S. public broadcaster NPR reported earlier.

Three Types Of Questions That Your Plastic Surgeon Is Likely To ...

If you are going for an arm lift surgery, the plastic surgeon is most likely to ask you three questions before he gets down to the business of actually performing the surgery. Arm lift surgery is also known in medical circles as brachioplasty. For purposes of this discussion and to make it easier for everyone, that term is what we will be using. These three questions are going to be asked by the plastic surgeon for various reasons. First, the surgeons may want to make sure how realistic your expectations are, so they'd be asking these questions. Secondly, the surgeon is likely to ask these three types of question with the aim of figuring out whether it is safe to carry out the surgery on you. Now, the first type of questions that your plastic surgeon is likely to ask before carrying out arm lift surgery on you is that of questions touching on your 'general expectations'. After all, the plastic surgeons want to make sure that you are going for this procedure with realistic expectations from the start. If the expectations prove to be unrealistic, it is time for the surgeon to weigh several options. If it seems as though the patient expects too much and he is going to be quite difficult to please at the end, the surgeon could decide to refuse performing the procedure on the patient.

The second question that plastic surgeons who perform brachioplasty would want answered prior to performing the procedure would pertain to the patient's general health. The surgeon will be asking these questions in order to find out whether it is really safe to subject you to a brachioplasty or not. It is possible that the patient has a condition that would only worsen when he is subjected to brachioplasty. To avoid this, the surgeon could refuse performing brachioplasty on him.

The third type of questions that the plastic surgeon is likely to ask, before carrying out arm lift surgery, is that of questions touching on other surgeries you have had in the past. Any decisions on the part of the plastic surgeon on whether brachioplasty would be performed on you would be affected by this information. The surgeon would also be able to decide how to best perform brachioplasty on you if he has deemed it safe for you to undergo the surgery. While the brachioplasty is being performed, the surgeon would know whether to use certain types of anesthetics or avoid them entirely if you happen to be allergic to them.

This is an antique aqua glass embossed bottle with original paper label from 1870. Bottle is for ?poor man?s family bitters?. Bottle has a wrap-around front label and embossing of ?Poor Man?s Family Bitters? on the back side. The beautiful label tells all the afflictions this cure-all was used for and directions for use. Antique bottle came right out of a full case which still has the sawdust packing inside of it. This bottle is in as perfect condition as it comes with the label never having seen daylight until now. Medicine bottle has no chips or cracks and has a cork-top. The original contents are still inside, as well, which is hard to find. The top has a proprietary stamp on it dated November 11, 1870. This bottle was produced 5 years after the civil war ended. They put these stamps on items back then to raise money for the wounded veterans of the war. It is the county seat of Oswego County.?The city of Oswego is bordered by the towns of Oswego, Minetto, and Scriba to the west, south, and east, respectively, and by Lake Ontario to the north. The State University of New York at Oswego is located just outside the city on the lake. Oswego is the namesake for communities in Montana, Oregon, Illinois, and Kansas.

Early History

The British established a trading post in the area in 1722 and fortified it with a log palisade later called Fort Oswego. The first fortification on the site of the current Fort Ontario was built by the British in 1755 and called the ?Fort of the Six Nations.?

Military Base

Fort Ontario was destroyed by the French upon capturing it in the Battle of Fort Oswego, during the French and Indian War. Construction of a second British fort began on the same site in 1759, but Fort Oswego was only used as a cannon emplacement. During the American Revolution, the British abandoned the Fort, and in 1778, American troops destroyed it. In 1782, the British reoccupied Fort Ontario, and didn?t forfeit it to the U.S. until 1796, thirteen years after the cessation of hostilities in the Revolution. During the War of 1812, a weaker American garrison at Fort Oswego was overwhelmed by superior British forces, in order to stem the flow of supplies from the interior of New York state. Throughout the 19th Century, the U.S. military maintained a presence at Fort Ontario.
At the end of the Second World War, the ?new? fort was used as a ?Safe Haven,? an emergency refugee center for victims of the Nazi Holocaust, the only one of its kind in the U.S. In 1946 the Fort was transferred to the State of New York. Initially used to house veterans and their families during the post-war period, development of the fort as a State Historic Site began in 1949

The fort that stands today was built between 1839 and 1844. Major masonry improvements to the forts outer wall were undertaken, but left incomplete when in 1872, congress cancelled its funding. By 1901, the old fort was abandoned.

Today, Fort Ontario is being restored to its 1867-72 appearance. Costumed interpreters recreate the lives of the officers, men, and civilians who garrisoned the fort in 1868-9.

Growth of the City

Oswego was incorporated as a village on March 14, 1828, and the Oswego Canal, a branch of the Erie Canal, reached the area in 1829. The city was incorporated in 1848. When the city incorporated, its area and population were removed from the figures reported for the towns. In the 1850s, at the height of a popular water-cure movement occurring in the U.S.A., in turn stimulating growth, Oswego was the home of the Oswego Water Cure establishment, which Stonewall Jackson reportedly visited in August 1850.

Oswego is home to the port of Oswego and once was a major railroad hub for the New York Central, Lackawanna/Erie Lackawanna, and NY Ontario and Western railways. Three stations remain (as landmarks not functioning): two passenger (D&LW and NYC) and one freight (NYC) as does a rather large trestle over the Oswego River. The tunnel on a local hiking trail in the city was the north end of the NYO&W.

Oswego was home to almost 1,000 Jewish refugees during World War II including one particularly feisty refugee by the name of Scruff. Fort Ontario was the only attempt by the United States to shelter Jewish refugees during the war. Oswego also has the Safe Haven Museum to commemorate the stories of the refugees. [Wikipedia]

Iraqi officials: Gunmen kill 3 people in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi police officials say attacks by gunmen in Baghdad have left three people dead, including two policemen.

The officials say one attack took place early Saturday when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing two policemen and wounding another.

In downtown Karradah, gunmen on Friday night attacked the house of a police lieutenant colonel who worked with the State Identity Directorate, killing him, the officials added.

Health officials at nearby hospitals confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

On magic:While magicians as a collective play a significant role in Ylcea, the individual mage is much less impressive.

Magicians are a vast minority, even in the City. All magic is innate, there is no spellchanting unless it helps your character concentrate. Training will make you more efficient. Individual differences in both endurance and power exist. The Algam people grow up with magic permeating their bodies, and generally make more powerful mages than humans.

Magical power:
In Ylcea, magic is a birthright - only a select few possess it, and the majority of these people live their lives in ignorance. Magicians possess a replenishing pool of energy, also known as mana. This pool ordinarily lies dormant, sealed deep within the mage's soul. For a mana seal to break on its own is exceedingly rare. However, any mana seal within the City walls is automatically broken. This is how Spelheim has monopolized magic for centuries.

It is one of the Council's greatest desires to discover how the Apostate broke the mana seals of those living in Algam, and they fear she might provide the same service to Id-Heren.

Magicians can only go for so long without using magic. Mana will build up, initially causing a debilitating fever after around seven days, with death following some days after. This complicates hiding one?s magic, although it is still quite possible to do.

In the countryside, there are very little reasons for wanting to hide. Being allowed to move to the holy grounds of the capital is considered a great fortune. Tax reductions are given to villages or Towns that aid in bringing magicians to the City. In the City, hiding one?s magic is punished as a crime.

Schools:

Elemental magic:
Elemental magic is what humans and beastlings awaken if their broken mana seal forms normal magic circuits in the soul. Each magician is born to one Domain: Air, Water, Earth or Fire. In effect, magic controls states, not elements. Air mages control gases, Water mages control fluids, Earth mages control solids, and Fire mages control plasmas. This magic system considers even low-temperature fires proper plasmas.

Elemental magic functions under these three three basic rules: Mana is Life, Mana is Energy, and Mana Rejects Mana.

Mana is life.
Every living being possesses some measure of life-force, which is proportionately depleted as that organisms ages and sickens. Mana is not convertible into life-force: magicians live no longer or healthier. Life-force is convertible to mana, however, and a select few City mages are taught to cast from lifespan - their own as well as others'.

Mana is energy.
Magic is the practice of manifesting mana as worldly energy. All magicians can manifest kinetic energy - they may move the state of their Domain. Further specializations are determined by Talents.

Mana rejects mana.
As life is mana, and mana rejects itself, it is impossible to cast magic on a living being. Magic cannot pull a man's heart out, but a sufficiently skilled user may pull at lifeless body parts such as hair, and in theory, nails and skin. Mana does not reject magic, however - a magical fire is no longer any different than a real fire, and it can set a man aflame. (However, it would be nigh impossible to manifest a fire directly against skin, or inside someone's lungs or gastric tract.)

Elemental Talents:
Each domain has its own Talents, innate specializations that determine a magician's capabilities. Catagorizing them is one of the City's efforts, but it's a rather debated science. Most magicians possess two Talents, but plenty possess only a single, more powerful one. Three is not unheard of. Four has only appeared a few times in the history of the City, and when it did, each individual Talent was uselessly weak.

The Creation Talent allows magicians to not only move their Domain, but also create it. Fire magicians create fire. Earth magicians may create rocks or (precious) metals, but only miniscule quantities. Air and Water Creation exist, but unlike earth, the City sees little use for them. The magic system in this roleplay takes Einstein's mass?energy equivalence into account by outright ignoring it. Either that or Ylcean lightspeed is equal to the pace of a snail. (It isn't. Vision would be weird.)

The Long-Range Talent is self-explanatory. A Fire magician with both Long-Range and Creation can light a fire from miles away, given a clear line of sight. A Fire Magician with only a powerful Long-Range Talent, however, may direct the lightning in a thunderstorm, or quell a raging fire by pulling it from its fuel.

Enchanting is the Talent to create persistent magic - without a secondary Talent, it will limit itself to movement. The sewerage of the City is largely dependent on these Water enchantments. Long-Range Enchanting Air mages are in charge of manipulating the weather. Enchanted merchandise is always in high demand - Enchanting Water mages with a secondary Talent in Splitting may enchant glasses to separate poisons (or other gunk) from water. The same Talent set in the Air domain may create enchanted masks that make it easier to breathe. This latter application would have the mask attract more oxygen, even though the City is not technologically advanced enough to understand what oxygen does.

A number of unidentified Talents exist - humans may lack the magical output or creativity to use them. Players are free to think of their own Talents. We'll toss any original ones around a bit to make it fit the system.

Soul magic:
Soul magic is what happens when a magician's mana seal is incorrectly, or incompletely broken. Mana seeps out and carves magic circuits in an aberrant fashion. Though almost always fatal, exceptions exist. Generally, this group does not convert mana into energy (or matter) - it manipulates mana itself. The City has no experience with Soul magic, and thus no Talents are defined. Both the Apostate and the Red King possess Soul magic, and while I shan't delve too deeply into these two characters at this point, the Apostate is capable of moving around her own mana, and the Red King can convert his mana into excessive life-force. I realize this class provides the most personalized magic, but I'd rather not have an too many Soul mages - it would not match with the lore. Due to the complex nature of this group, the specifics would be discussed jointly.

Holy magic:
Both Spelheim's and Id-Heren's priests claim to some holy influence. While holy magic as a school does not truly exist, a number of magical artifacts exist within Ylcea. Some of these do rest in the hands of the Church. The Citian Church calls them their tools of the Maker. In truth, these artifacts were created by Enchanting-type Soul magicians in an ancient past. Several of these are still hidden through the land.

P&O Cruises'?Ventura?ship?will have repairs made to a crack in an aluminium deck while it is in port in Southampton in the U.K. on?Friday, ahead of a two-day mini-cruise.

One of the welds directly below the Laguna Pool deck cracked open during a rough crossing across the?Bay of Biscay, leaving a?two-inch gap?width-ways across the deck, according to passengers posting on?board. The area was immediately taped off and, according to posts from passengers on?board, people on Deck 14 were told not to use their balconies.

A spokesperson for P&O said the crack had no ?structural?or safety issues,? and that the mini-cruise would set sail as planned tonight.

The incident first came to light on the?Cruise Critic message boards?when user "davedex"?wrote: ?Just read that Ventura has suffered a crack width wise by Breakers Bar.?

User?"drewlin"?wrote: "Just noticed on the P&O forum that a major problem has occurred on Ventura -- "Currently on Ventura and after a rough passage into the bob one of the deck welds on deck 17 overlooking the Laguna pool has split open leaving about a 2 inch gap across the deck. The area is now taped off."

User?"Thejuggler"?added: ?I suspect this has been a problem joint since it was built, but it has only just manifested itself. Stress fractures on steel are not unknown and there's no way every weld can be checked during construction. It's due for a refit, looks like an extra job is required.?

The 116,000-ton, 3,080-passenger Ventura, which was launched in 2008, will?go into dry dock?on March 22 next year, for scheduled repairs for 15 days.

The incident is also being talked about extensively on the?P&O Facebook page?where Peter Smith wrote: ?Ventura is now 4cm longer than Azura. Seriously, there is a 4cm gap across the whole starboard side of deck 16 which has caused a window pane to lose support. There is no other damage and no risk. The fact that the gap didn't close up after the ship stopped flexing shows that the welded joint must have been under considerable tension.?

P&O made the following statement: ?Repairs will be made to an aluminium deck on Ventura upon arrival in Southampton today. This has no structural strength or safety implications. Ventura will leave Southampton later today as planned for a two night cruise.?

TERRE HAUTE ? Real-life stories inspire Laura Brownson.

A few years ago, Brownson ? a filmmaker, wife and mother ? sat in a New York City theater, watching a beat poet named Lemon Andersen on the stage, sharing the struggles of his life.

The seeds of Brownson?s new documentary, ?Lemon,? which airs on WTIU tonight at 10 o?clock, were sown.

?I was incredibly moved by the fact that he could communicate to me a very different life than mine,? Brownson said Thursday by telephone from Los Angeles, where she, her husband and their two sons live. Brownson directed and produced ?Lemon? with film partner Beth Levison, spending 31?2 years on the project. It depicts the plight of men during the era of the crack-cocaine and AIDS epidemics in urban America. AIDS claimed the lives of Andersen?s Puerto Rican mother and Norwegian-American father, leaving him to survive as an orphan at just 14 years old. He did stints in jail, before turning to poetry ? an art form that landed him an improbable gig on Broadway, where he won a Tony Award.

The fame and money disappeared when the show ended, though, and he wound up back in the projects. Trying to support his wife and two daughters, Andersen was determined to revive his career and escape the lingering hardship.

That is where Brownson, Levison and their film team picked up the story.

Brownson and Andersen ?don?t come from even remotely similar backgrounds,? she explained. ?He grew up in the streets of New York, in Brooklyn, and I grew up ? at least part of the time ? in Terre Haute, Indiana.?

Her parents, Bill and Joan Brownson, moved to Terre Haute when Laura was a small child. Bill taught philosophy of education as an Indiana State University professor, and the Brownsons lived on South 21st Street. Laura attended Davis Park Elementary School, loved visiting Deming Park, and developed a fondness for the town, even after the family moved to northern California when she was 8 years old. ?I have a real soft spot for Terre Haute,? she said.

Brownson studied journalism and political science at Cal-Berkeley, and worked briefly in radio and television news, but realized she?d likely have to move from California to begin such a career. Instead, she chose filmmaking as a vocational outlet for her storytelling. She lived in New York for a decade, before returning to L.A. Now 43, Brownson?s r?sum? includes work on projects with Sean Penn, Michael Douglas and other notables, as well as works that have appeared on CBS, Showtime, HBO and Lifetime. Along with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Richard Friedenberg, she is currently developing a film called ?Brother of the Pilot.?

Documentaries and narrative films, though, remain her passion.

?I was always drawn to true stories,? she said, ?and it wasn?t until I made a documentary that I found my niche in the film industry.?

She instantly was drawn to Andersen?s saga. After seeing his New York performance, Brownson explored the details of his life when she and Levison sat down and talked with Andersen.

?For me, ?Lemon? was just a way for me to shine a little bit of light on that problem? experienced by men in urban America, Brownson said.

In the years since, as they?ve periodically revisited his situation, she and the poet have become friends. His determination to lift his young family out of poverty impressed Brownson. ?Really, everything he does is trying to bring a better life to his daughters,? she said.

Her own father-daughter bond is deep and special, too. Bill Brownson passed away during the filming of ?Lemon.? Laura dedicated the film to her dad.

?He was just a true intellectual, who had true ideas, which really affected me as a documentary filmmaker,? she said.

Without spoiling the conclusion of ?Lemon,? Brownson happily reports that Andersen ?really has turned the corner artistically, professionally and personally.? As for Brownson, she has a couple of projects planned, including another documentary.

She enjoys the challenge of topics, regardless of the difficulties, in which ?I can?t change the facts.? Real people, real stories motivate Laura Brownson.
