College of Charleston to Host Concert by Fisk Jubilee Singers

Charleston, SC Feb. 11, 2013 ? The College of Charleston?s Avery Research Center will host a fundraising concert and reception featuring the renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers on April 19, 2013. Under the direction of Dr. Paul Kwami, The Fisk Jubilee Singers travel worldwide singing the American musical tradition known as the Negro Spirituals.

The concert will be held at the Circular Congregational Church located on 150 Meeting Street starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for adults; $10 children ages 12 and under.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students of Fisk University, a historically Black college, established in 1866. In 1871, the original Jubilee Singers introduced ?slave songs? or the ?Sorrow Songs??a term coined by Dr. W.E.B. DuBois? to the world and were responsible for preserving this important and uniquely American musical tradition.

In the late 19th century, they traveled to Europe performing before kings and queens, breaking racial barriers, both abroad and here at home.

All proceeds from the concert will support public programs at The Avery Research Center.
