UFC middleweight Brian Stann announced his retirement on Thursday. After 18 fights in seven years, he's going to focus on his family and his broadcasting career. In addition to doing UFC work for Fox, he also will be working on college football this fall. Stann had some memorable scraps.
Mar. 3, 2013 -- Stann loses to Wanderlei Silva at UFC on Fuel 8: His last fight before retirement was a great one. Stann and Silva threw everything at each other before Silva finally knocked Stann out late in the second round.
Apr. 14, 2012 -- After knocking out Alessio Sakara, Stann stops the match on his own at UFC on Fuel 2: He used a bevy of knees and punches to knock out Sakara. As soon as he saw Sakara was out, Stann sat up and pointed to referee Marc Goddard that the fight was over.
May 28, 2011 -- Stann and Jorge Santiago put on Fight of the Night performance at UFC 130: Stann looked close to finishing the fight in the first round, but Santiago survived then managed to knock Stann around in the second. Stann came back to score the TKO with 31 seconds left in the second round.
Aug. 1, 2010 -- Stann wins middleweight debut and Fight of the Night: It's hard to steal the show when Jon Jones is on the card, but Stann managed it. In his first fight at 185 lbs., he won a Fight of the Night bonus and ended the bout with a sweet triangle choke in the third round.
Mar. 26, 2008 -- Stann wins the WEC light heavyweight belt at WEC 33: Before the UFC brought over the WEC's larger divisions and the complete merger of the promotions, Stann was the light heavyweight champ. He won the WEC belt with a memorable first-round knockout of Doug Marshall.
Stann is known not just for his big wins, but the work he does out of the cage. Commentating for Fox, finding jobs for fellow veterans, and now being a leader on how to handle retirement.
