Two Kassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel late last night, although they did not cause any damage or injuries.
Shortly after 10pm local time, residents of the Eshkol region heard the ?Code Red? warning siren and shortly afterwards two rockets exploded in open areas. There has been no admission of responsibility for the rockets from Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, or from any other Palestinian organisations based in the area. There has been no response to the rocket salvo from the IDF.
Periodic rocket fire from the Gaza Strip has punctuated relative calm in the area after a ceasefire brought an end to Operation Pillar of Defence in November, during which Israel sought to stop an increased rate of rocket fire from Gaza on Israeli population centres. However, a barrage of six Gaza rockets was fired last month, two of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile system, prompting Israel?s Air Force to strike four Hamas military targets in the Gaza Strip in response.
Since then, attention has turned to Egypt and the increasing lawlessness in the neighbouring Sinai Peninsula. The Times reports this morning that Egyptian security forces are working to seal the labyrinth of tunnels connecting the Sinai region to the Gaza Strip, which it fears is a rich source of weaponry and fighters being provided by Hamas, which is considered a close ally to the ousted Muslim Brotherhood and its political leader Mohammed Morsi. Indeed, accusations that Morsi collaborated with Hamas are a central part of the treason charges which have been brought against him by Egyptian prosecutors this week.
